Idle Surging

Alot of the time during the day while im out driving in the heat, I will usually get quite a few surges or points where the car whille suddenly jerk, making the idle fall about 200 revs and then balance back out. THIS ALMOST ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN IT IS WARM OUTSIDE BUT ALMOST NEVER WHEN ITS EARLY IN THE MORNING AND CHILLY. Ive been trying to diagnose it for some time now, but i was recently told by a local indy shop that since it is only when the car is sitting at idle without being under load such as half throttle driving, that it is most likely just a vacuum leak. Can anybody confirm this or give me some type of answer to what I should do?

Ate you talking about when you're at a stop light it goes from 600 to 800 rpms then back down? It happens like once or twice but then it stops. Thought that was normal for the 335i Idk about the 328. For me it's really rare so Idk. I don't worry about it cause I've seen it before. If your symptom is a little different please elaborate.

It goes from about 600 to 500 and the car jerks really hard. I use 91 from random places and it jerks no matter what

Could be a gummed up injector, a bad coil pack, bad spark plug, or it could be fixed with a DME update.

My car had a rough idle here and there. The dealership performed SIB 12-21-12 (which I've not been able to find details for) and it seemed to get better. It still happens from time to time, but not as frequently and it smooths out more quickly if it does come up.

Good luck!

Check your eccentric shaft sensor connector. See if you have oil residue in it. It's a free and easy check and at least you can check that box off the list.

Before you replace any parts, please test your battery. Do a load test at your local auto parts store. I know it seems odd but I ve seen crazy things happened with our cars and all was due to a low battery. Are you still running on your original battery?

I think I have it narrowed down to the eccentric shaft sensor. It had oil in it when we did the VCG and we didnt think anything of it. I guess thats probably it.

Hopefully it's that simple. Let us know. So if it has oil do you just clean it or new sensor?
