Calling all E93 owners
So I was driving along today, just minding my own business, when all of a sudden a sound like a little screw tapping along a plastic surface came from the rear of the vehicle with the top up.
I have no idea what the hell it is and I can't see any screw or other piece lying along the back part along the back window or anywhere thereabouts. It's going to be fun explaining this one to the dealer... I'm about to just trade this damn car in and get a Honda Civic... I swear. |

That is the left-handed knurldurner. Probably just fell off the knippling pin. Simple fix. Take to BMW dealership. They'll have it fixed in ooh 3 weeks. $3,500. I'm sure they'll let you drive their Mini loaner...

Man that could be a lot things.. It's weird because the more time I spend on the forum the more anal I get about my e93 and any I mean even the slightest noises while driving and this thread isn't helping... Lol I've heard similar noises near the front of my car though and most of the time it's just my mind playing tricks on me only to find that it's just my phone rattling (I usually let it sit in the small cubby above the shifter) or loose change that I keep there or in the storage box under the arm rest. I'm not at all saying that you are just hearing something but check the trunk or anything you have laying around back there that might be bouncing around due to the vibrations while driving. Goodluck!

I noticed a similar sound while washing mine two nights ago. Car was off, I was outside, and I could her at the sound. Opened the door and it seemed to be coming from somewhere near the back of the driver's seat. I just let it go, haven't heard it again so far.

I do have the ears of a wolf I'm told, yet I have tinnitus- go figure
Tires are literally 12 hours on the car. Who knows what it was- the hardtop still works and nothing has fallen off the car, so my give-a-fuck meter is on standby for now Could have been a road pebble...meh. |

I have solved all noise problems on mine, basically they make no noise with the top down and the wind blowing past your ears, so I just never drive my car unless the top is down - problem solved!
BTW - I have a 2012 Civic SI that I drive top up when top up is needed and you really don't want to swap your E93 for a civic as driving my civic just reminds me constantly of how much better my E93 is problems and all! Sorry I have no answer to your actual question though - the early cars had some issues with a wire harness coming a bit loose back right and would cause some noise but it would be more constant and not sound like one thing falling off. I have had one thing fall off my roof you can check, if you stack the roof and put it in the trunk and stop it before the trunk lid closes, there are 2 plastic parts about 2 inches long one on each side that when the trunk lid closes, it hits them and it acts as a buffer slider, I had one fall off as they are just glued on - if it fell off top up would make a bit of a noise like you describe and eventually you will find it in the trunk - will try to take a picture later. So after an anal and largely uneducated examination of the hardtop in mid drop, I noticed these little plastic pieces are a major piece of shit.
On the right-hand side it was giving when I pressed it gently with the top up, so I twisted it slightly in mid drop and I believe I snapped it back into place, but I doubt this is what made the noise somehow, as the top was up at the time. Here's a picture for reference- BMW be should be ashamed of themselves for cheaping out on these parts. I am sure it is just a matter of time before these pieces of shit snap altogether on me. Found the culprit- not sure how it happened but a little gravel pebble somehow kicked up from the road, ricocheted off my back window, tap danced along my trunk lip and fell inside the lip between the trunk and back window. Amazing!

I had a pebble bounce and get stuck between my brake dust shield and my rotor. Made a grinding noise that was miserable.

Wow that is impressive that the pebble got up into the works - glad you found it though - who knows what it could do in the wrong place!

Nah I don't think it did, only was in there for a day or two and I didn't notice any vibration upon braking.
