Tranny surprise

I had two problems with my automatic:
1. She'd give me a really hard banging-upshift from 3rd to 4th gear. The problem was intermittent, not too often, and seemed to rear itself more when I'd use the paddles but not exclusively.

2. Stick would not downshift (DIY shifter assembly fix).
I had her drained and installed with a new gasket/filter. The oil was very black, but there were no visible metal shavings. The day after the repair was completed I drove her very gingerly and it seemed OK at first, but I had a return of the 3-4 bang.

I decided to repair #2 and do a adaption reset in the same sitting. Repairing #2 went fine, I had one broken purple wire. I then sent the adaptation reset via BT cable. That went fine.

When I took her out I was hoping for the best, but expecting at least was started with, and to my surprise, she showed me the yellow gear! WTF. Now nearly all gears shift poorly, hard, or awkward at best. Some upshifts spike the RPMs by 500 and sometimes the yellow gear pokes it's head again too.

Add to that, the D doesn't come up when I flip the stick back and forth! I have to switch it up to neutral and back to get back into D mode from sport. Otherwise she just sits there in same gear doing nothing even though I'm in the D slot.

Up until that point I've never done the adaption myself but I did have a dealer do it once, and I didn't have any of these problems.

Anyone ideas?

Have you spilled water onto the shifter assembly? Maybe just throwing ideas around.

Sounds like a programming fault if it got worse when you hooked up a computer to it...

After you do a adaptive reset the transmission has to learn again similar to replacing the valve body (mechatronics unit)

I would follow this adaptation guide from level 10 (they sell new upgraded valve body's)
https://www.levelten.com/v/vspfiles/...20ADAPTIVE.pdf

After completing it see if the condition improves.

As far as the d to ds shifting problem, thats not right you made a mistake somewhere during the repair. Recheck the shifting assembly, its very sensitive, I once dropped a walnut down there into the assembly when I had my center console trim off, and no shit it gave me a yellow gear icon, otherwise car drove fine until I fished it out it cleared.

Ack, foiled again...

But in all seriousness, do you have all gears operating, both forwards and back? Or when you mention that it sits there doing nothing, it is only in a forward gear?

Sounds to me that worst, worst case scenario, your Mechatronics unit is taking a crap. Or in a lot of cases( not so worst case, worst scenario) where the mechatronics unit is fine, the square seal that lives between the mechatronics and transmission housing is either cracked or just not sealing. This in most cases I have come across give all the symptoms of what you are experiencing.(Harsh shift quality and banging in gears) IN both cases, the transmission oil pan as to be taken off and mechatronics removed. Not the most pleasant job to do at home, however it can be done. (As for instructions, there is a lot of info on this part.) 8/10 times this is the problem the other 1 is the Mechatronics, and the other 1 is a failed transmission.

Here is a picture of the seal circled in red. (ZF Transmission)

HTH.

Thanks for the response X_Drive. Ahh, I knew I didn't describe that very well. All forward and reverse gears work -in D only- or -in m/s only-, unless I get yellow geared.

The problem, besides the poor shifting is- let's say I'm in m/s mode in 4th gear and I decide I'm over it and want to go into auto-pilot with the transmission...so I shift the stick over to "D"...the transmission just sticks there in 4th instead of going into whatever gear makes sense. I have to pop the stick up to "N" and back to "D" to get the transmission to wake for auto-pilot.
