Unhappy Next Car and 335is Repair Worries...

I have had my 335is for almost 3 yrs with 45k on it now. Car just returned from one week in the shop for DCT fitting leak and turbo charge pipe leak. Tranny had to come out. A 2k repair if not under warranty!!

Ok, now I rant. Seriously??!! Only 45k on a well babied car and already the tranny is leaking, tranny harness damaged by a rodent, leaking turbo charge pipe, already had the rotors warp and they were replaced with pads under warranty. I am concerned this car will be brutal after warranty is out. Though I am 2yrs away from next car I am planning now and frankly looking outside BMW as one option....

My service advisor told me how reliable the v8 m3's are and I would consider one of those. I am getting pretty gun shy otherwise. Before you accuse me of being a ninny, I have owned multiple performance cars, EVO's, Porsches etc but nothing quite like this experience.

I appreciate your thoughts, opinions and feedback.

I love German cars but will never own one out of warranty.

Sounds like bad luck. Im sure there are other "is" owners who have had 3 yrs w/o issues. '10 here been solid for 4 yrs. Nothing more than regular maintenance (i lied i blew my CP on stock boost, but i replaced it DIY w/ a c-Pe one ordered from BMS - az heat probably did mine in).

You've had Porsches, evos, and such but think the 335i is bad?

The rodent part isn't anyone's fault.

Charge pipe is an easy 30min job and $300 for an aftermarket one.

Are you tuned?

Doesn't seem anything out of the ordinary... if you're tuned that plastic charge pipe is bound to go sooner or later

I've heard of CPs going out even on stock boost if you live in a drier climate and a lot of heat gets to them.

I had mine go...for obvious reasons.

Makes sense, and OP lives out in dry sunny California too! Mine is still hanging on for dear life

Doesn't sound too bad to me. Just make sure you find and kill the rodent, and replace that crappy plastic charge pipe...

Go for an M3 and I guarantee you it still won't be the end of your repair worries.

But like everyone says, I see nothing out of the ordinary. Get an extended warranty if you plan to keep it for a while.

From my experience that is exactly your issue - these cars can't be babied!! The n54 in my 535i has been phenomenal! How often are you changing your oil? Hopefully, every 8k miles MAX. Regardless of BMW's ridiculous 15k recommendation, I usually change my oil every 6-8 months or 6,000-7,500 miles. If I'm going to be on a long road trip I'll let it go to 8,000 miles but never any further without an oil change.
Drive it hard, maintain it well, and repair things immediately when they break. If you do those things these engines are truly amazing!
I actually haven't had any issues owning german cars outside of warranty. I owned a 1993 MBZ 300e from 1999-2011 and that was a great car as well. My 08 535i has been phenomenal as I mentioned, and I'm hoping the n54 in my 335i will be just as good!
I DIY most repairs/maintenance and I've got a great mechanic who I take the car to when the work is too complicated or time consuming for myself to do.

Never got the "never will own a German car out of warranty"
A car note forever seems more expensive.

Coming from somebody who just spent $1k on 6x injectors today.

IMO, a person best suited to own a BMW out of warranty would have to meet the following two qualifications:
1. They are a performance car enthusiast.

2. They have the ability to do DIY on many of the repairs needed or have a lot of money to burn.

We have a 2007 E90 6MT that has been FBO since about 2K miles on it and it's now at almost 110K miles and still on original fuel pumps. Only things that have been changed are coils, plugs, water pump and thermostat and head unit was replaced under warranty. We also have a 2009 E92 335i with about 47K miles which is also FBO and soon RB powered and plugs have been changed once...nothing else outside of oil changes. Sorry your luck has been bad but they're not always lemons.

here we go again with the sky is falling. If turbo fails, hmm....here's a thought, take 4k out of the bank and fix it, now the problem is gone for years.

You lose 4k in any trade/purchase just like that.

Ooooh, it's so SCARY driving a German car out of warranty. That's how men are different than animals, they can plan ahead.

Swing over to the M3 forum...EVERY repair/mod/insurance/fill up is $$ more.

At 45k, dealer should have replaced your plugs as well or you will soon be singing the misfire tune. My IS is a late MY2011 (Aug build) and needed this as well at 17k miles. Based on miles it's your DD and if you intend to keep the car another 3-4 years a service contract for piece of mind might not be a bad idea. Shop around as prices, restrictions and levels of service vary.

What prompted you to replace all six injectors? Where'd you get them so cheap? What software are you using to code them in?

Did you check the old ones against the recall?

2 and 3 were failing/failed. (Replaced all coils and plugs beforehand) If I was gonna replace one bank, might as well do the other. I got the injectors and decouplers on eBay. Newest OEM stuff.

Used INPA. Dealer said no recall on the injectors for me.

There's a whole DIY on here by Vassilanova(?) on how to do it.
