Now Hong Kong sells virgin BMW keys....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-VI...25d2d1&vxp=mtr

Apparently this is a new key and transponder that was never programmed. Says s specialist or dealer needs to program the key which confuses me because I thought a virgin key programs itself to the car.

Might also be able to use http://www.bmw-explorer.ru/?page_id=287&lang=en

So who's going to try?

That key is a waste of time, you won't be able to get it programmed by the dealer because they did not supply the key, considering a genuine bmw key is around $225 programmed. I really wouldn't bother with the hassle of trying to get that set up.

It's actually fairly easy to program if it works as described, but good luck finding a place that is willing to cut a laser-cut key... I tried at least 10 different locksmiths and the only one I found was in a mall 20 miles from home for $50.

It sound catchy considering a few weeks ago I almost lost my inner key, which I would really just go for the inner key instead of the whole remote

If a virgin key could be programmed into the car by itself, don't you think there would be alot more stolen BMW's?

CAS or EWS module can be pulled, dump the .bin/EEPROM, and write the new key into the memory directly that way. Which is what a locksmith would likely do, or pay the dealer to use their tool.

I know it doesn't work that way, I was insinuating that even though inserting a new key is what programs it when you get it from the dealer, that can't be the same for this.

I would steer clear from this one. This coming from HK doesn't help.

Try it man. I think I might, I read somewhere on this forum that to program it all u have to do is have your key fob with u in the car and simply enter the new key fob into the ignition slot and supposedly it's good to go

Thats true but only when you buy one from the dealership as there must be some kind of pre-programming.

True. I'm gonna try and email the guys selling the fobs on eBay and see what they say. There's a couple sellers in the states that have these for sale so lets see. The worst that can happen is that it doesn't work and I send the key back and get my money back

Would be a waste of time I just went through this, when you get a new key it is preprogrammed for your Vin. Then once you get the key stick it in your dash and hold in for 20 secs and this completes the programming. You can try if you like but it would be a waste of time and money. The only way this key would work is if you knew someone that could program it to your vehicles Vin number but I'm pretty sure no one but bmw can do that.

Ummm....it will work but you need to buy a key fob programmer on eBay, but the key insert will not work. This is how many BMWs are stolen in Europe.

I see : any idea if the one on eBay that says bmw ak90 works? And do you have any experience with it. It seems that even still going this route will save way more than going to the dealership to buy a replacement

You would save maybe $50 over going to the dealer and that's if you get it all to work. I bought one of the key fob "shell" from Hong Kong and it was trash, broke within a day I ended up gettin my money back 2 days later.

Best bet is to use a CCA discount if you have one or get friendly with your dealership parts guys. I got 15% off a new key.

The AK90 tool is used if you plan on doing EEPROM. Remove EWS/CAS, hook AK90 onto the correct chip, and manually write the key to it. Which even me, and automotive locksmith, will not touch.
