Trip Report: Northern California to Vegas

I can not think of a better car for this trip.

Round trip of 1080 miles.
Average speed of 70 mph according to the trip report in each direction.
30 MPG for entire trip.

That "average speed" includes two stops for bio break/fuel in each direction plus Vegas traffic.

There were twenty minute periods at 100mph (cruise control) at several points. It was amazing. Thank you Valentine One. Instant MPG indicated 28 mpg at steady 100mph.

Over 120 was not "comfortable" because of road surface, wind, and oncoming traffic.

Sorry for no pics.

In theory I could have driven slower and made each leg without stopping for fuel, but I am a living organism and therefore, the weak link in the system.

Thanks for sharing.
It really is an awesome cruiser + driver's car.

Bit surprised at your lower MPGs tough. I would have expected you to be well above 32 for a trip like that.

It was American Autobahn driving. Lots of passing over dashed yellow lines. That sucks for mileage but is exhilarating. Plus, much of the drive is up and down the Sierra Nevada.

The Nevada Highway Patrol uses instant-on Ka Band radar and unless there is no one ahead of you for 4 or 5 miles, a Valentine One gives you plenty of warning. Through the tiny Casino towns you set your cruise to 45-35-25-35-45 until you are out of town...then hammer down.

I am a safe and conservative driver. I will drive quickly but I don't like pissing people off.

I'll be relocating from MD to OR next month, so I'll post a daily trip report with mileage. Last August I took at 6,500 mile trip. Most long days the mpg was 39-41 for a full tank. I don't hammer it all the time, but I don't try to eke out every last yard out of a tank either. The worst mpg for a fill-up I have ever got were the two days at the track. Each of those tanks were between 26 and 27 mpg.

Yeah with the style of driving you were doing and the average speed, i'd say 30-32 range is about right for our cars. I've driven from NYC to Orlando and with an average speed of 72mph or so i would average about the same.

With the .26 drag coefficient, lower rpm and more efficient engine, i'm sure the same average speed (of course the 328d is slower) you would get in the low 40's.

Just out of curiosity. How are you calculating the fuel mileage numbers?

In the few full ups I have made so far on the D the computer is reporting worse economy than what it actually is. Getting 7.4 L/100 which is around 31 US MPG. However calculated by fuel consumed and distance driven I get 6.8 L/100 which is close to 34 US MPG

I set the trip odometer and just use that with how much fuel I put in, for example if I took 16 gall to fill and I went 515 miles I divide 515 by 16 and I get, 32.18mpg, my computer is usually within a mile of that...next fill I reset trip...
