335I's Retired! Hello new track toy![Updated w/track VID]

Picked her up this morning. '09 E92 M3 DCT. Mom will be daily driving the modded 335I for now, so I'll still post on this forum. I tracked the 335I for years, and she was hard to track, but fun. Can offer loads of advise to noobs on tracking the 335I. For now though, I'm

Short comparison: The M is just a different experience all together. I was very worried about the lack of torque compared to my modded 3, almost 450 wheel torque with race gas vs what, 250something wheel torque. The difference is there, but it isn't nearly as noticeable as I thought. Once you rev the M, the power is there. Which car do I like better? Well wouldn't you like to know

Neat, I'd love an e90 M3. Such a great package, awesome sound, great power.

I hope the price comes down with the F80 enough to justify the poor gas mpg (I only have one car on the road) and the 2 or 3 nagging issues those cars have (diff bolts, those pesky rod bearings ect). If the thing got 24-26 mpg on the highway (which it would if it didn't have such a short 6th gear, or 7th in the dct) and didn't have the bearing issue, I would've pulled the trigger by now.

Your car looks super clean, I hope you get everything out of it you hoped for, congrats on the purchase!

Thanks so much for the good wishes! I'm honestly not scared of the rod bearing issues. Looks like it is somewhat, helped by using mobil 1 0W40 instead of the really thick stuff that the oem specs call for. Either way, you only live once so I plan on having fun.

I'd love to know, cuz I am also considering e92/90 m3. Plz keep us updated, and if you could also advise us for tracking with 335i. I haven't any yet with my 07 6mt, but would love to do so once I get a second car for commute. You are right, you only live once and might as well have fun. But I also wanna minimize let downs at any cost. I think you still can have cheaper and more fun track toys. What do you think?

I do have a preference, but don't want to go that route, and derail the thread.

You can definitely have a cheaper and more fun track car in the used car market for sure. I went with the M, because I am already familiar with the vehicle's layout, and loved my 335I experience. I was also considering the CTS-V, GTR (I wish!), and C6 Z06. I narrowed it down to GTR, M3 and C6 Z06. In the end the DCT, and price was to good to pass up. If you are on a budget, and want a perfect track toy, then my vote is for the C5 Z06. Loads of room for modifications, and can truly hold it's own in stock form at the track.

Motor flushed, new engine oil, brake, power steering, and rear differential fluid. She's all sent for Saturday's track event.

What is involved with a motor flush? Or did you mean brake fluid flush?

Last Saturday, I ended up going to the track with the M3 for the first time. When i got there I parked next to an M3 that was exactly like mine. Same color, same trans, same options. It belong to a fellow that I had met at various tracks over the past 3 years. He used to have a 135I, that was modded with a whole bunch of stuff like procede. Like me, he always had issues running his car at the track. In fact the last time we met, he came up to me with his procede in his hand, and said: "how do you get this damned thing to work at the track". I reminded him, that I was the guy who said: "I having less problems with cobb, so try cobb." Anyways it was his first track day, as he had just gotten his car like I did. Here's a pic I took of both of our cars, and a video of me and my mom(she's a track veteran-passenger) having fun with a mustang boss 302:

My 335I had a ton of stuff to it, but driving the M3, I can see how severely camber challenged I was. Stock vs Stock is absolutely no comparison, it much fairer to compare my 335I with all it's mods.

335I
-understeer heaven dialed in from the factory. Was never able to correct this no matter what I tried
-handling once in the turn is much sweeter than the M3 because of the way the car dances. I attribute this to the weight distribution, and lower overall weight

M3
-superfast turn in. I'm still getting used to just how fast this thing dives. It's taking a bit of getting used to coming from the 335I
-In M dynamic Mode, it's a very tail happy car once in the corner. DSC over compensates, and boggs the engine. Wish I had my 335I's DTC, which the M doesn't have. Also really miss my Wavetrac LSD. The M-differential is ok, but I prefer my wavetrac.
-superfast corner exit. Mainly due to the Dual clutch trans, which is just sublime.
