Winter recommendation?
I live in the Bellevue, WA area and just picked up my 335i coupe with ZSP. While I wouldn't normally worry about snow in this area, given the unexpected snow last year I want to make sure I'm not stranded in case it comes down while I'm out. I've read on the forums (and the dealer told me) that with the 18" setup, you can't use snow chains. Has anyone had any success finding emergency traction devices that would help? Not looking for any serious snow driving here, just a safety net on the off-chance that I get stuck in an unexpected storm.
Thanks! - S |

UPDATE: Ordering Super-Z6s from SCC
Apparently these chains have super-low clearance requirements. Will see if they fit (by driving VERY slowly with them on) and post an update.
Has nobody else tried buying an emergency traction device for ZSP E90/92s? (Or does everyone else in the area want to take their car up where it snows regularly? Or am I being naive expecting to survive with summer tires? Or is it just plain obvious that I shouldn't be worried?) Any feedback appreciated! Thanks! -S |

Sorry, I can't help, since I just bought my 335i E90 back in May. I haven't been through a winter just yet with the ZSP package.

In theory their traction is are already compromised at times during low temperatures -- <30F...
I wasn't taking any chances, so I purchased a set of winter wheels from BMW. More info can be found in this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97451

Having said that few people I know got stuck up that hill trying to go up to Issaquah last year due to ice & etc. If you are planning on driving your car year around, I would get 17" 157's and throw some all weather tires on them. Things tend to get really messy for you guys based on where you live. The last thing you need is to slide into someone with your new car. My friend drove in snow all the way up to Whistler with his ZSP E92 335 last year and did just fine..... The big question is do you know how to drive in snow or are you like all the others we have in the NW. Good luck either way and welcome to the forum.

I remember that day in Issaquah...
I just re-installed my 17 in OEM all-seasons for this winter. However, I am on the lookout for 18 in all-season RFT's. Then I can keep my 189's on all year

Thanks everyone!
I don't plan on driving my E92 when the weather's supposed to be really crappy ... no matter what tires I have there isn't much I can do about everyone else driving like an idiot. OTOH, I don't want it to sit out the whole of Nov-Jan because the weather just may unexpectedly turn bad... MichTa73, if you find a good set of 18" RFTs pls post - I'd be interested in doing the same - sacrificing a little performance for more versatility. Is that the Highlands?! Wow - it was pretty bad on Cougar Mtn last year but not quite that bad. |

I would really reconsider putting chains on these cars;especially with zsp. If you throw a chain it'll tear your fender right off your car, and even if you don't throw one you're very likely to rub (nick) the hell out of your wheelwell when you turn. Save yourself some headaches and get a good set of all season /snow tires if you're really worried about it. A set of Blizzak's will last several years assuming you only drive on them for 4 months out of the year.
