Staggered setup on non-staggered wheels?

I have a 2007 325i which has 159 wheel type (17x8 ET34 225/45 R17). They currently have OEM conti runflats and I am trying to go the non runflats.

Question -- Can I keep the 225 in the front and get wider in the back - say 255? What would be the trade off or improvement? Or should I just get wider in all 4 wheels? How wide can I go on a 17x8?

I see no point in using staggered tires on square wheels. You can go up a size to 235/45/17 or maybe even 245/45/17.

Up front you can use with no problem : 225/45R17 or 235/45R17

Rear you can use : 225/45R17, 235/45R17 or 245/40R17.

Ok I am confused now. Others said run square on square wheels but you are saying I can have wider tires at the back? I do want wider ones in the back and that is why I ask how wide is too much in front?

All I did was state what size tires you can fit on those wheels when used up front or in the rear. You can use any combination of the sizes I listed above.

Agreed. Just stick with square tires for square wheel fitment.
