For those of you with 2 sets of wheels__ Do you switch them yourselves ?
Just wondering..... of the people with a summer and winter set of wheels how many switch the wheels themselves?
I recently picked up a set of summer wheels from someone here on E90post, and I am not sure if I should go buy a floor jack, torque wrench, etc, or if I would be better off trusting a shop to do it for me. Since I didn't buy the wheels at a local tire shop, I am sure i would need to pay someone to switch them out. What do most of you do about switching wheels seasonally? Thanks |

I get them balanced annually a week before I switch. I do it all myself. It's better you have these tools at your disposal anyways so it's a good excuse to get some tools!

I use "Big O" tire. I buy my tires there, they don't care where I bought the wheels. Sometimes they have a great price themselves, and they'll install tires from TireRack (and order them for me) if not. They now know me well enough as a customer to do this for free without any fuss, no matter when I last bought tires. They've fixed a puncture for me in a tire I didn't buy there.
So much less work. I tell them to hand torque the wheels to X, and have never had a sign they didn't do that. It seems to be a franchise, policies can differ from shop to shop. But the bottom line is that it pays in many ways to find a local tire shop that you like, and that gets to know you as a steady customer. We do my wife's car there, also. Yeah, shamefully I'll admit that I pay someone to swap for me. Every year I tell myself I'm going to spend the $80 on a jack and torque wrench instead, but I never end up doing it... Been running two sets of wheels / tires for more than 10 years...

I have a local tire place literally around the corner from me that does it every year. This place is been in business for over 30 years, and they know what they're doing.
I borrow moms Honda Civic to take the summer/ winter set over there, drop them off, and come back with my car, and pick the wheels that came off that season up later. Many of us don't have the luxury of a lift, or ramps to change the tires ourselves, or space is a factor in many of our situations. |

Hft for the jack, about $60. My first one failed in a year, the second is now 5 y.o. Then get a 1x2 and cut it to be used as an adapter. Torque wrench a must. Pays for itself in a year.

Yep, change mine and my wife's out each Winter/Spring. I store the tires in an offsite storage facility we rent for all of our crap...umm, car parts I have A&L balance the tires and they are only 5 miles from my home.

Usually I take it to a shop. The 4 tires fit in my E93, but barely.
But I recently put on my summers and I learned how and did it myself using a friend's tools. It was pretty easy, so next time, I want to buy the tools I need and do it myself.

Yes. Need a good jack. I have a Michelin 3.5 tons. Jack one side up, put the jackstand, change both wheels, other side, drop it down, torque wheels and I'm on my way.

Of course! It's super easy, it took me about 35 min to switch to my summer setup last weekend. All you need it a good jack, the BMS Jack Pad Adapter, torque wrench, breaker bar, and a 17mm socket. Latex gloves are nice to have too, keeps your hands clean.

That jack that you have is actually good if say you also have a SUV in the household, instead of having two jacks you just get yours and it's good for the BMW as well. I think that one is $70 at hft. When I had to jack my wife's car I had to go and buy a jack, the thing was huge, which was the only disadvantage. But it took so many pumps to life the vehicle I returned it (Sears). Never had to jack her car again.
