Yup, I agree. As an Apple user since 1984 I'd love to see a retrofit available for my 2014 BMW but the odds of that happening are so extremely unlikely that I won't even get my hopes up.

reading about it further, you can see this is a complex system with its own UI. Looks like it will utilize a touchscreen and use a special AIrplay lightning cable.
More about it here: http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/...es-new-carplay and here: http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/...ainment-system Personally I bet it will be amazing but it looks like BMW would have to throw out their existing NAV unit and at that point iDrive seems pointless too. Combine that with the fact that more than half of BMW owners won't own an iPhone and I don't see BMW adopting this at all. Yet they are listed as future adopters.

At the bottom of this page its says knobs and buttons can control the interface. I really would love to replace the BMW interface with this. If I have to say "yes" to something one more time after I just said "yes" I'm going to rip the thing right out of the dash. |

Jalopnik has a little vid today of using Apple Carplay in a prototype Volvo for those who want to see it in action. I agree that if you could retain the iDrive controller as an alternate selector in conduction with a touchscreen, that would be the best of both worlds.

I think a retrofit would actually be pretty easy, but you would be facing a big obstacle.
I work in this industry and manufacture these types of products. The hardware would just need to pull display information for certain APPs in your iPhone and display it in its own UI. And then run Bluetooth to control HID functions through the iDrive knob (to my understanding there is a output for HID on CIC module). So i think from a technical aspect this is doable. The obstacle is getting Apple to allow you to make such a product and getting it approved through the MFI program. |

I dont think people would care whether or not Apple allows it.
Soon as someone figures this out Im betting tons of people will install it. Quote:

No way this will be retrofitted. Will be a complex system integrated into the car, not going to work with the existing equipment.

Personally, I think NBT is better than this in many ways. I doubt this thing allows you to open a browser to surf the net or let you play videos on the 8.8" display on virtually any format.

Yeah, it's possible, but if the time to deliver the iPhone 5 snap-in adaptor is any indication we'll be on iOS 21 (or iPhone 13) before CarPlay comes to our rides.

I think thats BMW's fault more than anyone. But if the aftermarket got involved in developing this, I think it would be available much sooner (maybe iPhone 8).

Apparently Pioneer is working on aftermarket equipment to bring in CarPlay:
http://www.macrumors.com/2014/03/12/...compatibility/ Not quite as elegant a solution, but if you really want it... |

BMW has worried much HP but has neglected Multimedia, there are many places in the world where your system does not work and where Navigation BMW sold thousands annually, Los sitemas Navigation for today reach all countries for little money but not BMW works in those places, there are many limitations for the make and market CARPLAY quickly overcome something that should be in series production for the best Auto world BMW.

This is why I regret buying my BMW. They are always late to the game in terms of incorporating digital technology into the car. They also wait years to provide updates or retrofits, that is, if they ever get around to doing it. They show no loyalty to the consumer that has already purchased the car. I don't want to buy a new car every couple of years to keep up with the digital technology. My next car will NOT be a BMW, that's for sure. This is enough for me. After two BMWs, I had enough of this catch-up game.

A lot of CarPlay relies on Siri and I have found it to be half baked and useless more than half the time I use it. I also find Apple maps less than stellar. Why a company with as much money and resources can't figure out how to allow me to plan a trip, as in a custom route, like what you can do on Google maps, then allow me to save it, then load it on my mobile device, is a mystery? The CarPlay implementation I have actually used was in a VW Golf. It is not a seamless integration into existing systems, but rather an optional system you can launch into. It's like using an alternate desktop on a computer. In the VW you have the MIB II head unit with its regular icons, then when you select CarPlay, or Android Auto a second OS screen launches with its icons, so you pick one or the other, but not both, and neither do everything, for example if AC controls are controlled on the screen you have to switch from CarPlay and navigate to the AC system and switch back for whatever it is that you were using. My friend who has a Golf with it is constantly bitching about is unreliability. He says it crashes all the time and requires that re reboot his phone to get it working again. It is not clear if the issue is VW or Apple, I would just stop using it, but he is stubborn. Personally, I prefer the iDrive with the BMW apps integration. The GoPro app worked no problem on my 2011 system, which is impressive. I am picking up a 2016 F31 this Saturday and looking forward to checking out the new system in depth. Usually I am all over the tech stuff, when it was announced I was excited about the prospect. Recently I have found Apple's latest innovations to be poorly documented, half baked and a little less than impressive, useful or magical. They are getting pretty far away form their 'it just works' mantra. With the aforementioned in mind, I don't mind taking a pass on CarPlay. I am typing this on an iPad pro and wearing an Apple Watch, I am pretty far from an Apple h8r. B. Last edited by bueller; 12-17-2015 at 11:37 PM.. |
