Thanks for sharing! Looks great!

I wonder if it's pro-media only, or if it works on non-navigation vehicles. iOS TomTom on the iDrive etc...

I've read it can be installed on any idrive system. They have found a solution to connect Apple TV with idrive.

Don't you need a WiFi host to link an iDevice to the Apple TV? Not sure they can be linked on the fly...

Looks very good. Any ideas on how to get it? And how exactly it works?

There is a micro USB on the back of both of my ATV3's. Meant for diagnostics and updates (un-bricking), otherwise it's HDMI or optical audio out.

I'd love iOS TomTom on my bog-o iDrive.

Good spot. Later 5 series video looks like an iDevice.

You'll need an inverter in there also. The power in for an ATV is a ~240V fig-8.

I think you need stuff like this...

This explains it a bit better

Seems a lot of hard work... Almost guaranteed to produce some rattles if you want it nice and hidden.

Got a price for parts from a supplier in the Middle East - 800 Euros. Probably give this a miss as the novelty will wear out pretty soon.

The parts as above on the video would be a lot less than that.

Apple TV £99
Inverter £35
HDMI to S Video converter £35
HDMI Lead £10
S Video Leads £20

Only issue would be, you would need your Apple TV unit on display for the remote to work.

You can of course control the Apple TV from your iPhone remote app however it's not clear to me how exactly this streams to the screen - is it using the in car wifi?

This would be called peer to peer airplay which is possible with later generation of apple tv 3 (must be specific build) and iOS 8. They allow you to stream to the apple TV without a router in the middle.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

================== copy and paste from apple website ======
Use peer-to-peer AirPlay
With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, you need one of these devices with iOS 8 or later:
iPhone 5 or later
iPad mini or iPad (4th generation or later)
iPod touch (5th generation or later)

You can stream content to your Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with software version 7.0 or later. Find out which Apple TV model you have.
Make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

Seen this on another part of the forum, though didn't realize it was going to become as main stream so quick! If it works, this is the ideal iPhone car integration!!
