Burning smell and whining sound

Hi guys, in December I painted the engine cover. A month or two later I started smelling something burning from the driver's seat. I can't tell where it is coming from when I open the hood. I also have been hearing for a few months a whining sound when accelerating. Anyone have any ideas what it might be and whether CPO warrant would cover this if I take it in now that the engine cover is painted?

Has your waterpump and/or thermostat failed yet? How many miles do you have?

Seems like classic symptoms of that. Unfortunately they die in a split second when most inconvenient and without tripping prior codes.

They will not care (or likely notice) a cosmetic thing like paint.

The water pump / thermostat have not failed yet. My car has about 45k miles.

Take off your engine cover and look around the bay for any oil leaks. It could be a leaking valve cover gasket, or an oil leak somewhere.

I will take the cover off and check. Could I have done something to cause a leaky valve cover gasket? How serious is this?

I doubt you did anything to it when you painted as the valve gasket cover is pretty deep down. If it is the valve gasket it's not too serious IMO. To get it fixed at an Indy shop it'll run you around 800 dollars. If you are car savvy, have the tools and are confident you can fix it, you can do it for around 100 dollars. The parts are pretty cheap, it's just the labor that gets you.

But I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, look for oil leaks and what not. If you aren't car savvy just bring it to a trustworthy shop. I would like an update on what the issue is once you find it.

Goodluck!

Also I'd figure CPO would cover but won't know until you find what it is.

Took it to dealership. They didn't mind that the engine cover was painted. Turns out that burning smell was a plastic bag that got caught next to downpipe (or somewhere along the pipe exhaust). They had to sand it off.

The whining sound was that the seal that goes on the top of the cowl had come off.
