M3 or M5?

If you already had a 135i (N54, modded) and wanted a 4 door M, would you rather go for the new M3 or the M5?

I'd say M3 but I would need to test drive both first. Based on looks M3 wins (But thats subjective)

It is an interresting question. More so now that the M3 and M5 overlap in their price brackets here in Canada. With the E90 and E60, even a fully loaded M3 still undercut a base M5 by a good $10k. Now, you can option up an M3 to a higher price than an M5.

However, I still see these two cars as quite different to fulfill different needs. The M5 is more of an executive luxo bahn stormer. It can handle an occasional track day, but it's not where it shines. On the other hand, the M3 is one of the best all rounders out there. It holds its own very well at the track and remains a very practical daily driver. For my personal need of a multi-purpose car, the M3/M4 is the better fit. I certainly hope that this characteristic that had me enjoy my E46 and E92 so much will be retained in the F8X.

If you already went to Pizza Hut, but would like a burger next, would you go to Mc Donalds or Burger King ?

I feel your question is about the same.

Depends on what you want, when you want it, what you want it for, if you can afford it, if your family agrees etc...

M3 is the one of the two that won't feel like a dump truck to you, but...

M2 Gran Coupe is in all likelihood the real car you are going to want in your garage... when it gets here in two+ years

Sorry, but the F10 M5 doesn't feel like a dump truck. It's big, yes, but it's very well behaved. However, if you have any inclination to track the car, the M5 isn't the car to do it in.

I think he was referring to a "dump truck" b/c the OP is coming from a relatively small/light 135i...

Although I really want the F80, I too will check out the M5. Obviously price isn't everything, but with the M5 currently selling at or near invoice and the F80/82 rates likely to be dismal, from a financial perspective the two may be close.

The interior of the new M3 is really nice and having been in both cars the M3 seems a small notch higher. The engine is amazing in M5, M3 is faster :-)

I'm sure a reputable aftermarket company can do a nice job of that for you, for the cost of an R8 or so. (Well, maybe not so much on the interior part)

I'll be thoroughly impressed if the interior of the M3 is M5 level. I only have seat time in the F30, E90 M3 and F10 M5 (and M6). The M5 and M6 were worlds ahead of the E9x M3 IMO, even the F30 seems better than the old M3.

I have high hopes for the F8x M engine to be glorious, but I just saw a very minor tune to the M5 put down 625whp which is ridiculous. Running 11s in a car that big with only minor tweaking is crazy.

If you think the interior of the F80 is above the F10 M5, you need to get some new glasses.

M5 is an extremely large car compared to an M3. I have been driving 4 door BMWs for a while now and dont see myself ever getting a 5 series not even for a second car.

Do you care about MPG? That's an aspect I would consider.

per bmw they both have the same 0-1000m times at 21.9s

and the m3 is quoted as faster to 60.

I have driven an m6 and saw the new m3 in person. The interior is damn close, I actually like it better. The materials are really nice this go around, and the trim and styling is much more sporty than the m6. the CF trim also is a different weave and looks better.

I think the seats are nicer in the m3 as well. But I would definitely say the m3 is up there with the m5/6 interior.

BMW quotes the m3 as being just as fast as the m5, so we will see.

I'd expect it to be just as fast in a straight line due to power/weight (maybe not from a roll from 80-140 or something though) and if the interior is as good as you guys are saying, that makes it a huge win IMO. My biggest concern was the lack of luxury feel as compared to it's 5 and 6 series brothers.

Exactly. The M5 is viciously fast in acceleration, very luxurious inside, and feels like a really large land yacht, in comparison to the E90 M3 (which I know we aren't discussing but which we've likely all driven). The M3 will probably be a little slower and not quite as high end inside but will feel far more nimble and agile. I feel like the M5 is a compromise (as someone else on this board said): it's a two parts 750 mixed with one part M3.

If you cruise freeways all day long, you might like the M5. I drove a friend's car for an entire weekend and it convinced me to keep my E90 M3.
