Watch as Key Fob?
UPDATE:
ok.. since people don't seem to like watches... how about this, a thin sticker/patch (IN ADDITION TO YOUR ORIGINAL KEY FOBS) that you can attach to your cell phone, watch, etc that has the RFID chip required to unlock your car using CA? Better? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It would be great if BMW could come up with a watch that works as your key fob (as an OPTION in addition to your original key fobs). Of course you will need to have CA. Basically the chip will be planted inside your watch. There will be three buttons: LOCK, UNLOCK, and TRUNK. Since the watch comes with CA, you don't need to insert anything to start the car. I think a mechanical key is probably not so important anymore, since BMW assist can unlock your car anywhere in the US if your watch malfunctions. They should partner with some higher-end watch company, and it would boost the sales of that brand of watch too. Lexus already has a 2-credit-card-thick key that you can keep in your wallet. And in HK they sell watches and cell phone faceplates/covers that work as your touchless public transportation card. What do you guys think? Point is, why carry so many things if you can combine them into one? update: bmw assist cannot start your car Last edited by rzm3; 11-04-2007 at 10:26 PM.. |

Im sorry, but Im not going to rock some swatch looking watch just to get into my car. Plus are they going to make both a mens and womens version for every VIN?
Good thinking, hope you dont work in marketing.

Remember these are entry level luxuries... not $150,000+ cars... if BMW did this, it would fall into the list of the most retarded inventions right next to stupid cup holders.. |

Do people even wear watches anymore? Its my understanding the watch industry is struggling due to time devices being on mobile phones, etc. I know I havent worn a watch in probably 7-8 yrs.

I think an embedded chip design affords more flexibility in this case - specifically embedded into your phone of choice. Who wouldn't want to use their phone to also unlock their car? And rfid in most phones would be trivial to implement.

it would be good if they got BReitling involved in this idea, given their and BMWs association with aviation.

Hmm, so you would have to carry your watch around everywhere you went i order to drive your car. That works fine if you only go to work or go out with it, but what if you are just heading into the gym and the grocery store for some milk?

The metal key is there just in case your car battery dies.
BTW: In case you never realized it, CA also goes dead if the battery in the fob dies, but the metal key will still open the locked door and if you push the fob into the socket, the immobilizer will still see the RFID chip in the fob and allow you to start the car.

Shaken…not stirred, right? I'm just not sure if I want to expose my shit to that much remote access. Being the guy who pays for it...I'd prefer control. I mean, let's face it...that's why manual tranny is the only way to go. : P CA in the 3 series is just fine for now. Let's see where it goes heading into 2012. my two cents...

Totally sell it? Wow, would it even be possible to only part way sell it? I think that's called rent.
