ipod 5th gen & iDrive / Pro Nav

I've searched Google & e90Post but come up with yes, no & maybe so:

Does the iPod 5th Gen work on a 2011 Pro Nav with Combox?

If so will I need the ridiculously priced iPod Lightning adapter or will the standard Lightening/USB lead work?

Do the BMW apps still work as they should (tethered to my SGS3)

Are there any drawback going from 4th Gen to 5th Gen?

To answer my own question the iPod Touch 5th Gen 64GB works just fine, as does the supplied lighting/USB connector. In my car the 5 works better than gen 4 did so a worthwhile upgrade.
