RFT light on - take to nearby pepboys or attempt to drive to nearest dealer?
hey guys, i would appreciate your advice.
My RFT warning light came on today while i was driving in manhattan. I live in jersey city and am 2 minutes from pepboys. my dealer is in freehold, nj (1 hour away). what is my best option in terms of getting taken care of and costs? 1) get problem fixed at pepboys (can they fix RFTs, do they charge $$$) 2) attempt to drive to freehold, nj, my dealership 3) drive to bmw of manhattan (not my dealer....not sure if they would take care of me or would i have to fork over extra money??) (it would also suck if my car breaks down in the middle of the holland tunnel i'm still in manhattan and i'm terrified about driving back home later and going through the tunnel) other facts: i am leasing, i signed up for the wheel/tire warranty (forgot what the actual coverage is!)

Good question; is it low or is it a puncture?

I drove about 15-20 miles with a rear puncture with no issues.

Thanks so much for the quick response - that is reassuring. How was your damage (literally and financially)?

A piece of metal, a bit larger than a regular nail through the tread. I do not remember exactly but it was about $450+. I was reimbursed 100%.

Put air back into it, let it sit for an hour or so and re-check the pressure. If it hasn't dropped more than a pound or two, drive it to your dealer or tire shop. I had to drive with a screw in the tire for a couple of days before I could get it to the tire dealer, non-BMW. Just checked the air pressure constantly.

It doesn't take a huge temperature drop outside for the light to come on due to slightly low pressure.

Sometimes the tire doesnt need any air either. First try to reset your tpms sensors and if that doesnt work then take it to a dealer. You dont necessarily have a problem with the tire.

I wouldn't just reset the tmps...i would first check the tire pressures. If one has dropped a good bit, I would inflate it to the 32 or 35 lbs (front or back) and then reset the tpms sensor. Then see what happens over the next week or so. Check it again and see what the pressure is...etc.
