Sump pan gasket replacement cost?
Has anyone here had this leaking and got it replaced? Typically from a BMW dealer how much is the total - parts and labour? Can this job be done at an independent BMW specialist without any problem - at a lower cost? Thanks for any replies
P.S. Is the N46 engine more prone to oil leaks than other engines? Last edited by E90F30er; 12-09-2013 at 03:54 AM.. |

I've just had mine done under warranty so I can't help out on price.
However, I would imagine the gasket is say £20 and main dealer BMW rates are about £160 per hour. This is a job any decent independent could do as it's just removing the sump, cleaning and refitting. Don't forget you might need to factor in new engine oil unless you want them to put the old stuff back in Jon

I'm told it's a 3 hour job so we are talking 3x160 pounds minimum? If one has had the oil changed in the past few months should one still get new oil put in rather than putting the old stuff in?
The garage looked at it and was sure the oil was not coming from the "rocket cover / gasket" as that's leaking too so told me the sump pan gasket needs replacing. I wonder if I should get a second opinion? |

If you can safely get the front of the car jacked up and on axle stands you can remove the plastic under tray. That way you might be able to better see where the leak is coming from.
The bmw assist engineer thought mine was engine oil but the worst leak was gearbox Who has looked at your car? Can they quote on the repair? I don't think you need it done at bmw! Any decent garage can replace a sump gasket. Jon

The sump pan gasket got replaced at dealer. On the old iDrive (CCC / pre facelift) Professional Navigation the oil level meter had 5 green squares filled in at max level from min level. However driving the car for 36 miles the reading had gone down 2 squares and 3 remain before it reaches min level and it will be time to "add 1 litre of oil".
Something is *seriously* not right again (!). What do you suggest? I'm now losing my patience...! |

Is the sump pan gasket job a) hard & b) common? Should they have not checked if it would leak again (if possible?) before returning the car to me? It's getting beyond joking point!

I did read somewhere the sumps on certain models are plastic and can warp causing leaks. If this is the case with yours then a new gasket will not resolve the leak, you need a new sump and gasket
