How to clean under the hood?

Do you guys do it? How to do it safely?

Do I just wipe the engine hood and exposed parts with a damp rag?

My last car was messy after a few years of services with oils and fluid spills and dust, so would like to start cleaning this time around...

Thanks.

use some degreaser and spray onto a rag and wipe

I would not advise of using a powerspray at all.

Maybe a stupid question, but what's a degreaser? Is there a brand product I can look for?

It's a solvent that removes grease and other grime from parts. Helps to keep things clean. Simple green works good. I use it on my 4wheeler

You can use a jet wash, but need to be sure the entire electrical system is protected & water tight. You will still need to use degreaser or APC or 'all purpose cleaner' (I use Meguiars) with this method - the wash stage just ensure that you remove the cleaning chemicals. Run the engine after cleaning to speed up drying time. Not for the faint hearted and proceed with caution; only really needed if your engine bay is really dirty.

Another option is to use steam cleaner - if you don't want to steam direct into the engine bay from fear of getting the electrical system wet, steam a microfiber, then wipe engine parts. This is my prefer method (also good for light interior cleaning as it means you don't use chemicals).

Once cleaned, protect plastic parts with something like 303 Aerospace Protectant.
