What to do with the old replaced parts
What are you guys doing with your old parts after maintenance? I have a pile of old parts that's getting bigger and bigger. I'm talking about ignition coils, water pump, thermostat, belt, pullies and maybe more. Fluids I return to Autozone, but those!?? Can I get some $ from them or shall I send a Christmas Gift to BMW ;-)

Worn out old parts from maintenance? Just throw them away.

If you've got parts that have just been replaced with new modifications and they're still good, sell them on, but to that, I'd only recommend it if you have no plans to sell your car which most people do anyways. If down the road you want to sell your ride, changing back to the stock parts and selling on the mods will yield more cash. For some reason people usually shun modified cars, unless of course they're fellow enthusiasts.

If these are old replaced parts that you won't install in your car you should trash them. Pars that are in good shape (trim, switches, etc.) you can sell on ebay.

The metal parts, I'll recycle them locally. Mostly everything else, I'll just throw out if its worn and useless. Though if it was replaced because you wanted to mod, you could just keep the OEM part handy or sell them as someone (like myself!) would love to by new/used parts depending on what it is.

Depends on how much of a "committ-o-phobe" you are.
Me, I still have my stock oil cooler, inter cooler, exhaust, kidneys, and reflectors. The car is mine, so I may try to sell off in the spring. The last one was a lease, so I held onto every part, then sold off my performance versions of those parts at the end for a nice lil chunk of change towards my 335 vert. It's all about strategy, and your situation really. |

Yeah modification parts definitely keep original for when you plan to sell. I was stupid and sold my stock fmic after I installed my aftermarket one. With an fmic, I don't think it will be an issue though as nobody will even be able to tell it's aftermarket and it's better for the car anyway.
If the part is no good, scrap it. |

we should all donate our used parts to the "fourm" and create a forum "scrap car"

I'll take the advice of recycling the metal parts. I've heard in the old days people were rebuilding water pumps and selling it, but I don't know if BMW parts can be rebuilt. Before I throw it I'll post the parts in the "For Sale" section for free just pay for shipping. Thanks for your advices!

Glad you got it figured out.
The only thing I would save would be spare coils or something like that. Say, if coils 4 & 5 were misfiring and I replaced all six, I would put 1-3,6 on the shelf in the new boxes as spares in case of failure. Any item like a used water pump is not worth the shipping.

Passed the coils and the water pump to a member of this forum.
None of the coils were misfiring. Maybe not very clever to replace all six without a problem but I'm considering it a part of +100K miles maintenance. |
