E93 335i Should I take the plunge

I have had my e93 with the dreaded 2.0 petrol engine for over 3 years now and its had all the issues and remedies mentioned numerous times on here.

I have been tempted to change it numerous times especially when the warning lights came on or the mot guy uttered the fateful words "your wheels are cracked", but as soon as the sun came out all the doubts washed away and despite spending another wedge on it recently I would have another e93 in a heartbeat.

But there is an elephant in the room, the one thing that has bothered me on days like today being stuck behind various Citroen, Kia, Vauxhall hatchbacks (god I hate hatchbacks) is the lack of grunt the 2.0 sadly suffers from. Having trawaled the web I am finding more and more e93 335i's at sub £15000 with good service history although high miles 90,000+.

So to get to the point, and mpg apart , would you good guys on here take the plunge and if so am I likely to regret it at some stage.

Since you've had your "engine issues", you must now be ready to deal with anything that comes your way...

if you're after performance, then do it!....320 v/s 335, you will feel the difference!

Hmm I can understand how you're feeling but with 90k on the clock I'd be getting nervous. You want to be getting away from the issues not prolonging them (potentially).

If I had gone through your experiences I'd be looking for reliability over power

once you've had a car with decent grunt you will never want another gutless wonder! if your are worried about the mileage go one better and a get a 335d. just realised you are talking about a vert, try the 330d in that case.

I would say yes do it, take a test drive in a 335i and you will not be happy in a 2.0 anymore, plus there are some real bargains to be had at the moment, eg my old car is for sale at a dealer for only £13k has only done 50k miles 2007 335i with almost every option.

Thanks all, yes I agree about the high mileage but if its been in a dealer recently should most things not have been checked, I know my dealer 2 weeks ago gave my car a thorough going over. Most of the ones within 100 miles of me in the NW are high mileage with no sat nav although I note a lovely looking one with DCT in Sheffield. Agree with the diesel being an option as well.

I love the 335i and find driving something like a 320, even the brand new 320i which is turbocharged is not nearly as rewarding. The 335 just has so much torque and in M Sport finish feels nice and tight too. It's comfortably quicker than most things on the road other than high-end or Motorsport type models - BMs, Jags etc.

I wouldn't be worried about high miles but I would get a full BMW warranty with the N54 engine. Mine has paid for itself many times over and whilst it's expensive, it brings full peace of mind. I think you'd need under 100k miles to get one. My car has done over 60,000 miles and still feels superb in every sense. No doubt there are some rough examples out there so it all depends how it's been looked after.

Personally I'd get a lower mileage one, or find one that has a monthly rolling warranty that is still in the sub 60k price bracket. A warranty on an E93 60k+ miles is going to cost you a good grand a year and with it being high mileage the warranty is going to be more of a must imo. I really don't think it is worth saving 10-15% and going for a 80k miler vs a 40k miler. That is of course your choice and trade off.

If you aren't fussed on NAV you'll have more choice.
The N54 engine based E93's (mainly all models until 2010) are up in the £470/year tax band with the exception of the DCT box.
If you get an an AUC, you get a year warranty thrown in with that price

Don't overlook the 330i. I'm getting 29mpg auto box and its faultless and does not have a lot of the issues the 335i has with turbos etc.

Around 280 bhp to boot as well

yum yum

Yes absolutely do it, in fact buy mine!

It was on here about a month ago but I've not had time to follow up on it as I was knee deep in a house refurbishment. Was just planning to trade it in as I don't really have the time to sell it with a baby imminent but PM me if you want details, I'd rather see a forum member get it then a dealer make money off it.

Get a 335!! Petrol or Diesel. Both are wonderful cars with different advantages/disadvantages compared to each other.

You will love life driving a 335! She will comfort you in tough times.

Thanks for all the offers, been to check a couple today and didnt really get the right answers about cracked wheels and service history so a bit put off now. And got offered £7000 for my 08 plate mint 320 e93 which made me walk out without asking anything else.

I hate the car buying bit !!

After looking at 6 and not really getting the deal or assurances I want, I am tempted now to keep mine till for another few months and see what else turns up.

Thanks to all for the advice, it gave me much to consider.

Just keen an eye out. The 4 vert is out soon. E93's will start to become available then I think, and prices will tumble a bit as people trade in. Cracked wheels can be inspected. Just ask them for an inspection report. Generally AUC will not be sold with cracked wheels. If they want to sell you the car they will look if you ask them to. I got the dealer to do loads of bits before I picked mine up.

Thanks Andy, thats just what I propose to do. I did get to drive a 330i which felt very quick compared to mine but the deal he offered was appalling and well below the book price.

I wonder what it is that attracts you to the M-Sport that you would reject the 335i in the link? The only differences are cosmetic: the 335i in the link doesn't have shadow line trim, nor the fake rear diffuser, nor the sport sills, nor the ugly M-Sport front (personal opinion of course on that last one). Wheels look to be 17", but they will be staggered, so to all intents and purpose, no perceptible performance difference. On the inside there's a few bits and bobs that are different, none of which I'd pay for.

The 335i comes with M-Sport suspension and front sport seats.

Being an LCI it also has the N55 engine. And I think it's an (eight speed?) auto.

Quite a lot of car for the money, the only major omission (for some) being sat nav.

Ah well, you pay your money and make your choice. Good luck with your search.

Down to personal pref Ed, always had the M spec as I feel it makes a BMW look like a BMW but like you say each to his own.

There are great deals on N55 cars. Not sure why they are so cheap, but I have seen a few go at this price! OP also wants a vert I think so a coupe is no good...
