Automatic High Beams

Could some one explain to me how this feature works? I've searched could not find anything. On regular low beams do they automatically turn to high when a car is not in front or what? thanks

Yeah when you turn them on, there's a sensor that detects cars ahead of you, oncoming cars or sufficient lighting. When none of those things are detected they come on.

I found out after the fact that we have a watered down version from Europe. I thought they would remain on behind vehicles but create a shadow zone around the car in front by aiming outward.

So your saying they will come on automatically when there are no oncoming cars or sufficient lighting and then turn off automatically when car is approaching? So you basically don't have to do anything it works by itself?

It's almost creepy. Definitely cool though.

High beam assist works great on my SA build (2013 335i). The main niggle I have with it is that I always have to turn it on; resets back to "normal" when the car starts.

any idea why we don't? seems like a good feature that shouldn't trigger any sort of controversy, right?

Something something something US regulations. I actually found the regulations once when I first saw that video but can't find it now. The thing is, the headlights are the same, the car itself is the same, the wiring will be nearly identical. I'd imagine someone will figure out a way to either enable it or purchase said module to get it working on our state-side cars.

I don't care how many regulations or federal laws I'd be breaking, I want it!

I think it also shuts off if you manually enable high beams.

There's a camera under ur rear view mirror.

It sees light.

It goes to low beam then.

I find that it's very sensitive. It stays low beam until there is nothing making or reflecting light in front of you. I mean NOTHING. I think a firefly would make it stay low beams. So you may not be broken, just expecting it to go to high beam sooner than it thinks it should.

Haven't messed around with it a lot but I think it's ok. High beams are meant to be used when it's pitch black almost. Here in Quebec, it's illegal to use your high beams if there are street lamps alongside the road or if you are approaching an intersection. Regulations like these are probably why they are that sensitive.
