choppy throttle in 1st gear
we are 1600km's into the break in period with our '14 335 msport MT, with ppk and mpe. hoping this will go away after the break in, but right now in first gear with an even and smooth moderate application of the gas peddle the acceleration is choppy up untill about 2000 rpm. It's as if for a few milliseconds its not speeding up and then it catches and it starts accelerating and that is when the choppiness is felt. This doesn't happen every time, but is pretty consistent. it is most noticeable in comfort mode. is this something to do with the turbo? my last car was a 128i so i cant compare.
thanks. |

I have this SAME problem with my e92 335i....of course the dealer couldn't replicate the problem. Granted, it doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it looks like I'm a teenager trying to learn how to drive a stick in a $56k car....
I know the transmission in my e92 is different than the f30, but maybe there's some type of correlation??? (hoping so)

have had this happen a few times though not in the last couple of 1000 miles (at 7800 now). Used to choke up/cough to second gear when it happened. Now it seems to have worked itself out, shifting very smoothly up & down so maybe give it until 5000 miles (8000kms) and see it settles in? have also been stress testing the software, & the responses are not consistent so a more than a few kinks to work out for the 14s

I was noticing the same thing lately with my car (it has done 2,600km). It does not do it all the time. I'm planning to ask the dealer about it.

Please report back once you've seen your dealer. I will go if the problem persists after putting on some more km's. Is this only happening to MT drivers?

WOW I was thinking about starting a thread but wasn't sure how to describe the issue. I am having the same problem. I'm 5k miles in and 1st and 2nd seem like they are hesitating under light throttle and then catch up. I also feel 2 or 3 bumps at the same time almost as if something is loose underneath near the transmission. Only happens in 1st and 2nd when accelerating smoothly. Ironically when the car is cold it won't do it, only when it warms up.
If someone visits their dealer please post the results.

It feels like my old DCT when first starting off, but then again that was a manual transmission with electronic control. This is just a standard AT. Do you have the "sport A/T"? If so that may be the way they have it "coded" to feel a bit more like the DCT/manual. Not sure, but my '14 does it as well, just thought it was something they did to make it feel like the sportier ///M.

Well I would say that the AT drivers and the MT drivers have different problems here. Let's ignore 8AT guys for a second
For the 6MT guys do you experience this way after the clutch has been full disengaged? I.E. you either start from a stop or down shift into first and then as you have been moving and you add extra throttle it feels like the clutch is slipping? I had this pretty bad during my break-in period but after about 3,000 mi I don't notice it happening at all. That being said I had my timing sproket bolt come loose on my car, causing a damaged valve and so currently my car has no engine in it so I have been driving a loaner for 3 weeks so I may have forgotten how it's drives. |

I have the issue on my 8 AT, but it generally is only right after I back my car out of my garage and then put go from Reverse to Forward after it has been sitting for a while.
Have had it happen only very rarely outside of that. |

Possible cause
Couldn't wait to get an appointment at the dealer so I went to see my buddy at his garage. Took him for a ride and it took all of 8 seconds for him to tell me the car is misfiring. I'm not saying this is what you all are feeling but in my case 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear between 2k-3k rpm felt really choppy and hesitant and even beyond that rpm but less so. I feel what can be described as a thumping sound coming from the motor. He told me either a plug or two is fouled or could be a bad coil or even an injector possibly.
Will take it to the dealer to confirm his theory but he was 100 percent sure it is misfiring. He plugged in his $12k scanner but sadly it didn't have the 2013 programming to read this engine otherwise it would have been a definitive answer.

6MT or 8AT?
I have it first thing in the morning in the 8AT, after like 30 seconds, it goes away.... I don't think it's a misfire, it's more like a transmission thing...

Hmm I have a '13 335xi and I only see this problem during cold mornings. After the car warms up, the problem goes away. I had a very similar experience with my CLS 63. Let the car warm up, and it shouldn't be a problem.

for me it doesn't seem to matter if its after a cold start or not. its more about how i apply the throttle. if im very light on throttle (little input) it gets choppy. again it doesn't happen every time, so im not sure what is the culprit.

It's choppy in the transition from sub 10mph to +10mph bc the torque converter is unlocking.... It happens on all of our cars and is quite annoying but nothing is wrong ... I just tell myself this car was designed to go fast and that's why this was overlooked.

We bought this car because it was comfortable and got good mileage too. If it's the lockup converter, then BMW should do more fine tuning on the car because ours could almost give you whiplash. Maybe they'll do an update for this problem. We let it warm up for a couple of minutes before driving it (let it come off of fast idle) and then go. It leaps when you let off of the brake and almost took out the side of the garage. Not too happy with that. As I said, if I wanted a car with a high stall, I'd have kept my Vette (I wish that I would've anyway ). |
