HELP! Noise Issue #1 - BMW F30
Hi everyone,
I'm having weird noises from my F30 again. Love the car but the little issues are beginning to PISS me off. I took my car in for the first oil change and when I got it back, I started noticing this weird "CREEK" noise when the car starts to change gears from first, second and third gears. It also happens when I take my foot off the gas. I've taken it back to the dealer, played them the audio clip and got a response of: "It's the new exhaust they've put in the F30.". I say bullshit. Here's the same sound clip I played them: Does anyone know what this is? Was the dealer right? I really doubt a car manufacturer would install a new part in their best selling car that makes a noise like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Does it usually happen within the first two minutes of driving?
As it was explained to me, something in the turbo waste gates are designed to expand as they heat up. When cold, they'll rattle a bit. Is mine the same? Listen as my car passes the orange car. I am incidentally having other strange sounds come from the engine which may also be an issue with the turbo :-( |

I have the same sound but mine is when car starts and then in comfort mode going from 1st to 2nd. Doesn't happen in any other mode. Haven't taken it in yet, car seems to run fine.

Mine sounds very similar to yours. It will happen whether the engine is cold or warmed up. It's just really strange. Anyone else know if this is normal or something is really messed up? |

OP I would say thats the exhaust flap rattling from the exhaust burble, cause this rattle on your video really comes when I expect to hear the burble.
Just the other day I heard my flap rattle like crazy for a few minutes at start up after sitting out in the cold a few hours. Never happened before or again. Will have it fixed at warranty later, no big issue.

Sounds like the exhaust flap opening/closing to me. It's quite a noisy operation if you're outside the car. Completely normal however. Certainly, 43,000mls on and mine has had no issues. Here, take a listen of mine for yourself - especially at 0:16s, 0:28s and 0:45s.

rattle sounds
I went to the dealer recently in my neighbor due to the same rattle sound. Mine have the noise whenever I slow down my vehicle under 10 mph and release a gas pedal. The shop man told me it was coming from an exhaust flap and found the flap is misplaced. They changed a muffler and said issue was fixed. However, it is not. The noise is still there. So I revisited the same dealer and talked to the same shop person. He confirmed the same sounds exist and he will check other vehicle. I waited a week and got a call from a service adviser that this is normal and exiting issue. And I had a chance to hear same noise when the same vehicle was passing by. This is totally unbearable for this price range car. Poor quality control......

I'm pretty sure this is the exhaust flap.. I had to take it four times to get it checked out before with the last time sitting with the shop foreman before they would look at it.. each time before that they said that the sound was normal, but it was not..
mine was audible upon engine startup and everytime i hit about 20 km/hr driving they actually had to replace the entire exhaust system to fix mine, i heard from someone on another forum that replacing just the exhaust flap did the trick for them too below was my thread on this http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=897961 |
