Just drove a 328d wagon....and
I have to say, I'm keeping my 335d (and '03 Saab 9-5 Aero wagon). The wagon. The 4 cylinder engine was much smoother than i had expected. The 8 speed auto is very smooth really makes the most of the engine's torque curve. Sport mode felt very peppy, but Eco Pro upshifted at about 1500-1700rpm and was definitely focused on total MPG. I didn't get a chance to test the start stop either.
It is hard going from a ZSP equipped 335d to a base 328d as well, considering the flatter seats and softer suspension. The steering actually felt better than the last 328i loaner I had. I wonder what the car would feel like as a 320d Euro model with 6 speed manual... Torque is your friend....and as such, I don't see myself swapping to a newer 328d any time soon. The 425 lb/ft is just too sweet to say goodbye to...and all for 5-10mpg. Cheers, Paul H. |

Well, it's not like most people in US buy their diesels for fuel economy... More for torque.
Try Europe where you pay $150 for a full tank, that's where that extra 5-10mpg makes a real difference. I'd like to take 320d for a test drive. Might be something I'd consider as next car. |
