Possible retrofits to avoid using Y cable?

Hi everyone!

As i do not have any bluetooth connection, enhanced usb, navi, etc. on my E90 318d, i was just wondering how can i make ipod/iphone connection through usb cable?

I have only 6FL connection (usb&aux) under the armrest. My goal is to avoid using Y cable and internal iphone/ipod dac and let my professional radio to do all the work regarding sound conversion.

Maybe with this?

why dont you want to use Y cable?
if the length is the issue, u can get a 30pin extention wire to solve that
they are very cheap.

Are you interested in replacing the head unit at all?

IMO its the easiest way to do this, plus you can even get navigation, and bluetooth.

No, i would leave everything as it is, changing headunit is too expensive and complicated.

Maybe i'm wrong, but DAC installed in my radio (BMW Professional) is far batter than one installed in iPhone or iPod.

If you have USB, why connect IPOD/IPHONE at all? Copy music to a stick, done. No cable & best sound possible.

Cant say but iphone DACs have been independently tested and are very high quality. Best was the 3Gs though.

Retrofitting this HU still requires bmw cable.

Its better to use usb stick in such cases.

I have been lucky to compare iphone vs p99rs dacs.
P99rs had 4 separate dacs (high, mid, mid bass and low).
P99RS sounded flat and crystal clear.
Iphone dac boosted a bit of low frequencies and decreased upper end of the frequencies.
When I asked few of my friends to see which one was better for them (blind folding my samples) majority favoured iphone's dac.

To bring this topic up again - the thing is that most of my sound collection is in apple lossless format, and this format is NOT supported by the Basic or Professional radio...

So, i would need to hassle with converting tons of .m4a files to .mp3... so, iphone or ipod is a only way to go for me...

btw. i have installed Apple iPhone station (for iPhone 4) and there is no cradle available for iPhone 5. As i'm planning to upgrade my phone, i need to come up with some quality solution...
