This render was meant to be representive of the X5. Actually it is much closer to the BMW X1 . What you are looking at in the spy photographs is an evolution of today's highly successful X1. However the current car moves to the FWD UKL architecture in regards to increasing passenger room and more importantly X1 will feature xDrive.
If you look closer you can see the raised rear quarter light mimicking today's car. This new X1 has a more sporty looking roofline , rising glasshouse and broader wheel arches. The next X1 will be unveiled in 2015 possibly in time for the 2015 IAA?

I have consulted with some friends who work for BMW AG. The OP's above pics are indeed that of the new X1.

It has a sportier looks than the current model. Someting about the roofline and the side profile remind me the Merc GLA.

it already looks better than the current model when it comes to the profile of the car.
what i like is, that the hood connects to the grille. not this crappy gap as on the other models. maybe there is hope that this returns to the current models for their LCI or at least for the next models... |

i hate the interior of the current x1. its soooooo cheap. the detachable cupholder, the crappy center console and armrest. and to top it off, the screen that looks like an afterthought. hopefully they fix all these issues going forward. This seems to be more the size of the older x3. those wheels and tires are laughably too small for those arches.

@MDaniel: It will never be on sale next year, 2015 is more likely.
The X1 started in 2009 - normal life cycle is 7 years, so 2016 would be the normal change but 2015 sounds probable since it is a very important market with many competitors. @wdeerfield: are you talking about the LCI or pre LCI X1? There have been made some small but very effective changes with the LCI, it's much better now. |

Agreed, it does look better than the awkward current X1 (and I own one). It also doesn't have that terrible short distance from the front wheel to the door like so many fwd based vehicles, GLA included.
As for an E90 driver complaining about the E84 interior, especially the location of the nav, just don't look around your own car too closely. Our E82 had a cheaper feeling interior, but the E90 isn't much better and certainly not any nicer than our E84. The only area I can say an E91 is better done is the hatch area, where it seems BMW engineers went to sleep on the E84. |

Cool........but, i would not buy one. It has the lines of that small Mazda CX5 Suv, and it look good, but the FWD kills it for me.
