Angry 320d GT Daytime Running Lights

Hi

I have just taken delivery of a 320d GT and would like to know if the Daytime Running lights can be disabled.

According to the owners manual they can be disabled in countries where DRL aren't required by law. The dealer is making enquiries with BMW to see if they can be disabled.

I'm under the impression rightly or wrongly that DRL are not required in the uk.

Bottom line is I don't want DRL if I did I would have bought a Volvo.

Does anyone know how or who can disable them.

Hi link from the AA

I think the EU wants us all to be seen even in daylight!

I believe it is now uk law to have dlr on all new cars. Your dealer should not be allowed to turn them off.

Wondered the same thing. I've heard of people hating DRL, but never heard anyone say why.

If I wanted DLR I would have bought a Volvo.

They look nice but I don't want them on and need to find a solution to switch them off.

They will not turn them off for you, that I can assure you of. Otherwise, they would be breaking the law as they are now mandatory in the UK.

You can turn them off yourself via coding, but why?

You can code it to allow the option in idrive under lighting menu. I did it but to be honest never shut it off...they look to sick to be turned off

If you read the 'AA' link in Post #2 above you'll see why they cannot / should not be turned off.
If you think 'they look nice', then what's the problem ? Relax and enjoy the car.

Hi Nick

Could you shed some light on how to "code it" to activate the unction in the Idrive to switch the DRL off. Is it a DIY task or will it entail a visit to a main dealer or independent specialist.

Quite frankly I don't give a Rodents Rectum on how nice some of you perceive the DRL to be I NEED the option to turn them off.

The only comment about 'how nice they look' was from you in Post #6

. . . . and referring to your mention of a rodents rectum, quite frankly I don't give a sh*t whether you get them turned off or not

320d DRL

My reply should have read "they MAY look nice" and if you read the the thread you would have noticed that others were of the opinion that DRL are attractive.

Irrespective of their beauty or otherwise and the opinions of the AA, The EU beaurotwats I require the option to disable the DRL and would like to hear from anyone out there who can point me in the right direction of someone who knows how it's done.

I think it's because it's the date the car was designed. It had to have the option of DRL in 2011 and now it's compulsory. It looks like we are another Nanny State.

Personally, more and more cars will have them as newer cars appear on the road and I can't see mine from my drivers seat!! I'm more interested in what happens on the inside of the car and how it goes when I put my right foot to the floor

If you have a look on Wikipedia it is to do with when the car is homologated (I know this is the wrong word) ie F30 was type introduced post the date. Whereas your 5 was type tested before even though your specific car was built after.

320d GT Disabling daytime running lights

Is there any chance of being pointed me in the right direction of someone who can activate the option to DISABLE the DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS on my car.

Am a little surprised that with the apparent wealth of knowledge amongst the members of this forum no one has been able to provide me withe he intimation sought.

I think your answer was in post 3 and 7 - i.e. you won't get a dealer to do it.

Disable DLR

It would appear from reading other threads that there are a multitude of options/features that can be coded using an appropriate cale and software.

I am not a geek so won't go down the road of buying cable and software.

Which is why I am appealing to those out there who are in the know to point me in the direction of someone who possesses the knowledge hardware & software to re program my car
