you must have base audio. under-seats, 4" mids in the doors, no tweeters? that is powered by the head unit. you'd need to tap the sub for signal and run it through the likes of a JL Audio clean sweep to fix the EQ curve and give you the proper signal you need to feed amps.

Aftermarket Head Units come with side effects.
Aftermarket Head Units come with side effects.
Things like bluetooth , BMW Sos and PDC run through the Head Unit and removing it will cause them not to work and some will throw error codes plus without the original head unit installed Software updates and some repairs will not be possible at least at a BMW dealership. And they may not make it sound that much better but they are bound to be somewhat better. The speaker system in the Base system is not very good also. If you are interested in a Sound Quality upgrade look at the following link. But basically what Mathematics said is true. Although I don't know why he told you to tap the sub. In the base system the doors and floors are run off the same channel I suppose that's why. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323 the above will also tell you what going on with the base system. It's just easier to tap the subs because its easier than going to the door. Either way works though.
