Thermostat question (DPF related)

Hi,

my 5 year old (56500km) car never regenerated DPF filter so i was browsing the Internet looking for answers and i found that thermostat could be dead. I asked my mechanic if thermostat could be the problem and he told me not to worry since if it is it would report error in diagnostic. Now i was looking at thermostat (http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9...1 51 7 805 191) and i don't see any connector on it so it doesn't look like it's connected to car computer. He also told me there is some probe that measures particle density and when it crosses the limit DFP will regenerate itself.

3' E90, Sedan 320d (N47)3'
Region: Europe
Version: Left-hand drive
Transmission: Neutral
Date: '07, November

Should i worry?

US models (335d,X535d) have a sensors which measure the difference in pressure before and behind the DPF. Once the pressure drops to a certain level DPF burn off will begin.

So in the essence it could be i am using quality gas that doesn't clog my DPF ? What also worries me is that at the end of exhaust there is black residue which shouldn't be there with DPF. I should be able to put white cloth at the end and it shouldn't get black.
