According to BMS it's just a matter of extending the CAN wires across the engine bay (the F30 box is on the opposite side of the E9X one) and upload the F30 N55 firmware to the JB4 unit. So whatever a small amount of wire and some electrical tape cost is what you should expect to spend.

I don't doubt that it's compatible since the reps have all said that it is but I wasn't able to figure it out myself and I don't want to dig any deeper; I just bought one that was originally made for the F30 to replace this one.
