Any idea how much is the cost?
Nevermind, found out. It's $90 before shipping, tax, duty. Sounds good to me.

What are the advantages to using the K&N versus stock?

It would be great if these yielded similar gains to removing the carbon filters if not more. lol

Can someone address whether changing to K&N will provide any change in sound or performance.

Otherwise, why would anyone consider switching? Surely not for longevity

Installed mine. More intake sound, feels like a bit more throttle response, but it could be the placebo effect. Definitely think these will be more effective than stock.

Do these have the same issues with the MAF sensors? Only thing holding me back.

May provide a bit more performance than the stock papers, but to get the full effect you'll need to pull the charcoals.

I would think that if you over-oil them, yes. Saw a great tip somewhere (can't remember where) to keep you papers, and when you clean and re-oil keep the filters out of the car for a bit. Having the paper filters allows you to drive while the oiled filters are out.

I just installed the K&N air filters over the weekend. A few notes:

The last screw in the back corner of the air box on the driver's side is a major PITA and took an hour to get out by itself

One of the filters was drenchied in red oil. inside the plastic bag it came in. I had to dry the filter and left it out of the package to dry out a bit.

I feel like my car lost some low-RPM throttle response when I put my Supersprint racing mufflers on about a month ago. After installing the filters, it felt like the throttle felt as responsive in the low-RPMs as it had previously.

OT but Tom, the only reason you should lose TQ due to muffler install is if the vacuum lines are not properly plugged. Assume you've checked in to this?

I was there when the lines were plugged and I don't think that was it. The car seems powerful in all the rev range except for the throttle tip-in. The filters seem to have restored that feeling... but it may be all psychological..

I have used K&N in all my cars and never had a MAF sensor issue. That being said, you do have to make sure that the filter is not drenched in oil when puting it in the car. I would usually drop the filter onto a cardboard on the floor to shake off loose oil and take a rag and wipe it down in general before putting it in.

As for making a difference? Yes it does, but minor. It definetly flows better then stock paper filter. It make more of a difference when it you really need it such as at WOT/ high RPM. A little secret. That sticker that comes with it? It's worth about an additional 32 hp when you apply it to the correct spot on the car.

I do notice that putting an exhaust on the f10 M5 does change the characteristics of the the HP/Torque curve a bit. You will loose a bit of torque between 1000 to about 2500 rmp range. It will feel like you lost a bit of that initial throttle response feel. If you go to Akra's site and look at the chart, you will see the reduction in torque at that range. You will ultimatley gain peak HP and Torque but you will loose some in the low range. It's more pronounced depending on how you drive how heavy your foot is .

The other option is the BMC filters. Both the BMC and K&N are essentially the same filters...gauze type with a filter oil. The K&N may be a little cheaper though.

I've had the BMC filters installed for a while...no issues with the MAF.
