Old IPOD Compatiblilty?

I thought I would use my old IPOD that I had in my E60 M5 in my F10. Connected via the USB port in the arm rest but it doesn't work? A new IPOD seems to work fine. The old one dates back to 2006 I think. Anyone know how to make the old one work? Thanks.

I am having issues with the new one. It keeps on disconnecting.
