Insurance + Tracker

Just spoke with BMW insurance who informed me that they will not provide cover for my new 335D without a tracker fitted.

1. Has any member got a tracker fitted?
2. What other insurance companies do you guys use?

I'm currently with Directline who never mentioned a tracker when I discussed changing my policy from my current 330D to the 335D.

Comments appreciated.

My quote from BMW did not require a tracker for my 335d. Ultimately I chose eSure based on a cheaper quote. They too did not require a tracker. Not sure what parameters they are using for you, but maybe your postcode is a factor?

As it happens, I have a tracker anyway and use Tracker Monitor.

Hotcoupe, I used A plan insurance in the end. A very competitive broker, mention 'BmwLand' for a further discount. I am insured with Zurich, no Tracker required, £200xs, all options covered (cover to invoice price), I paid £470 (with one addnt driver), protected NCB, no points,

Number is: 01635 874646

Odd, they give free cover to most dealers for new cars for 7 days or so don't they? They didn't advise me it was a condition - may be a new policy.

In any case I found them not to be the most competitive or have the best policy. I'd strongly advise to shop around including the comparison sites (confused.com and others) but also look at those who don't show up - I did, going for privelege in the end as they i) cover the options (not all do, but some will charge you extra for them!), ii) will give a new car in first year if you have a total loss, iii) Were one of the cheapest and gave interest free credit (why pay them all in a lump sum!?) and iv) Had the best excess.

Well worth checking the small print of policy as not all are the same and you usually have 14 days cooling off so you can switch if you find somehting better.

Crikey, I thought leafy Reigate was suburbia land, but it's possibly worse then Brixton! (apologies to any residents of that delightful South London backwater)

Thanks for the tips Guys, but I was quite alarmed at the quote from BMW.
I'm no spring chicken at 4 (cough) nine (cough) and I have in excess of 5yrs NCB, no convictions & they still want the best part of 700 notes for Comp cover as long as I get a tracker fitted.

I currently pay £450 for my 330D (5yrs NCB protected + legal cover + 375 Excess) an increase of £250 seems a tad steep.

I'll be ringing round the insurance jockeys as soon as, that's for sure

700 notes doesn't sound a lot to me, mine is about that but then I have 6 points in last x years and my missus has had two accidents (one fault) in recent times.... maybe that's something to do with it. I also wanted quite a low excess, 375 would be too much for me. I have maximum no claims. I'd definitely expect the 335d to be a jump up from the 330d... somewhere between 1-200 quid so not far off. My previous insurance on a e46 325 convertible was nearer 1k but then about 200 quid or so of that was just for the options/mods added!!!! SO I was quite pleased with the reduction! I'm 33 thought, I'm not sure if it gets cheaper with age (no offence) beyond when you are in joy-driver terroritory (17-25ish).

Update

Just spoke with Directline (current insurers) and the increased premium from the 330D up to a 335D will be the hefty sum of................................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ........£11.55.

£452.55 for a 330D,£464.10 for the 335D, what a result.

Hahhh!!!! £700 - You GB'ers get it easy.

Because of the 'claim for everything' attitude in this country (NI) my policy is £1200 and I am 35 with full NCB. Lots of greedy b@$t@rds over here seem to suffer from compensitis whenever they even have the smallest of accidents.

You should go back and tell BMW insurance that they already have a tracker in your car if you have BMW Assist. They can pinpoint it exactly thru the internal GSM sim-card and GPS co-ordinates.

I think the BMW policy is that for an insured value of over £40K they demmand a tacking device.

Obviously depending on options you can have a variety of models that can break this barrier.

34 years, e92 335i. 8+ years NCB, clean licence, no tracker, parked on street. £900 pa with guaranteed NCB and renewal with More Than.

My cheapest quote was £780 for same but just protected NCB with Elephant, but decided I couldn't afford to have car if I ever claimed.

My company insures my car (via AON) and the stock position is any car over £30K must have a tracker.

Had a claim two years ago after a stone sticking out of the hedge come into contact with my left wheels. Two new alloys, tyres, side airbags, and roof lining (£2800 for clipping your wheels on a stone  )

I had the NCB protected so dont think that affected my insurance.

So last claim was back in 2000 when my 325tds was car-jacked.

Not quite so dramatic as that, but it was during a testdrive. When I was changing over to give the guy a drive, he snatched the keys from me while we were passing at the back of the car and pushed me so that he got into the car quicker and locked the doors and drove away.
I was just not waiting for it and he got me by surprise. I was bigger than him too and would more than likely been able to overpower him if I had caught the fecker

Needless to say I have been very careful since when selling cars privately.
