Rear Brakes

Tell me if this sounds right...

I took the car in for its yearly oil change and since the rear brakes were at 1500 miles asked if they would do the job so I didnt have to come back in a month. I get a call this afternoon saying the car is ready and that my rear brakes did not need to be done. Says the CBS was faulty, the brakes had more than 50% left and they reset it to spec. The car has 35k on it and now the rear brakes show change in 25000 miles. Brakes have not been changed on the car. The fronts also show 25000 miles left. Is this normal?

It seems very strange that the rears were at 1,500 miles left (which is just an estimate by the CBS) with 50% pad material still on the pads. Having 35K on the car with 25K estimated miles for the brakes to be changed is not abnormal. Depending on how the car is driven, brakes can easily go 60,000 miles. Without anyone messing with the brake system, that should not have happened.

But all and all, you don't really need to worry about the estimated miles left anyway. The CBS is only an estimate. The pads are determined spent when the wear sensor fully breaks its circuit and the pad wear indication in the gauge cluster lights and stays lit. In other words, if the CBS says the pads have 25,000 miles left and they actually wear out in 15,000 miles, the car will tell you when the pads actually need replacement.
