Did my own first oil change today

For my past 3 BMW's i've always waited until the scheduled oil change from BMW but this time i decided to do it myself at 12 000kms and BMW oil change is at every 20 000kms (never done an oil change before) and this is what i found

The oil filter slot...black

filter...blaaaack

oil that came out....blaaaaaack!

I've read on some other forums that black oil doesnt always mean its overdue for oil change. dont know if thats true or not but considering new oil goes in golden borwn...this looks terrible

Black oil doesn't mean anything unless you actually do an oil analysis. Engine oil is going to turn black fairly quickly once you start driving after an oil change.

Yup, what they said... BUT you did the right thing by changing it early!

You have magical eyes that are able to measure the viscosity of a fluid based on photos on the internet?

I always change the oil and filter once per year. In the first year I change at 6 months. Alway use the correct spec of oil. This is a very simple DIY job and I think it worth the time to do it.

question, after you change the oil yourself, does your "next service in x km" shown in the gauge cluster reset?

I did my own oil change today on my 2013 328i....I have 12000kms on the clock and the oil came out the same color as the OP's oil. I carefully measured the old oil and got exactly 5.4 liters out of the vehicle. I got the vehicle new and have never topped the oil up. I do weekly oil measurements and it always read max. I replaced it with 5.6 liters of Mobil 0W40 and immediately noticed the car was quieter on start up. A friend of mine who works on UK Police BMW's told me to use Mobil instead of BMW oil. His advice to use Mobil is based on his own opinion after working BMW's for the last 8 years. He said over the years they have used BMW oil, Castrol oil and Mobil oil and his personal preference is Mobil.
