Samsung Galaxy S4 on iDrive, works!

My car: 2010 335i pre-lci, iDrive, requires Y-cable to to play ipod/iphone. I don't have bluetooth audio.

I just picked up a samsung S4 today and plugged it in the usb slot in the armrest and the iDrive recognized the phone, it showed up on the display. I was able to play the song that comes pre-load on the all S4's and also song name, artist, album showed up on the display. Controls and everything worked.

I did not use a aux cable, just the usb.

I had another mini-usb cable and that didn't work, but the cable that came with the phone did.

I was always under the assumption that only apple products (OSX) were supported by the iDrive.

I'm surprised it mounted as a drive, but I suspect it will only play local storage files, not audio apps (Pandora, Spotify, etc)... let us know.

You have a pre-lci car, but you have the CIC navigation (2009+) which SHOULD be able to play your IPOD without the y-cable. Have you tried it? In my 2009 LCI sedan with CIC navi, my ipods work without the y cable, just the standard usb it came with. Depending on the size of ipod, it can take some time to load.

Does it play from the S4's SD card also?

(And a bit off-topic, but since you have the USB in armrest option can't you plug in a portable HDD and play files in a lossless format instead?)

I don't know, but an option called directory showed up. I can access a lots of different folders from the iDrive. I was wondering if theres a way to forward the music from pandora into one of those folders with coding to play pandora or other services.

I never tried a ipod but did try the iphone when I got the car with just a usb cable and it didn't work. I even tried the iphone last night with just the usb and it said its not supported, but does work with y-cable.
