Help me diagnose: window problem
On my wife's car ('09 e92 328i, out of warranty), her passenger side window stopped working. It will not go up or down, both auto and manual controls don't work. I checked all the associated fuses and they all look good. I tried the window reprogramming/initialization process but it did nothing (the window does not move when button is pressed). The dash has a warning light that I believe is associated with the window anti-trap function (not my pic, but it's the same light we have):
Since the car is out of warranty, I want to make sure I diagnose the problem correctly before I start buying random parts to replace. From what I've read searching, if it was the anti-trap sensor then the window would still go up and down. If it was the initialization, the window would at least work in manual mode. So I'm guessing it's either the power window motor or the regulator. Any way to tell which is the problem? Anyone out there had something similar happen? Any help is appreciated!! Almost all the way up. You know how e92's windows lower a bit when you upen the door (so it can seal when you close the door), it's in that position (slightly below fully-raised).

If you hear a grinding noise when trying to operate the window. Your regulator broke. If you don't hear anything you may have a motor problem. Good luck fixing it on your own if its a regulator. They need to be adjusted after install and it's a bitch.

I'm disappointed that I paid someone for the last regulator replacement. Never done it and it took 45 min. I heard grinding. Opened the door and the regulator cable was frayed and tangled and the little green plastic piece that holds the window in was broken. |

There is no noise whatsoever when you press the buttons, so I'm thinking it's a motor problem.

Don't assume so. When my regulator went and cable snapped, no noise was made either when hitting the button.
