Newb here - thinking of 330d or 335d

Hi All - hope you can give me a bit of advice.

I currently drive a MkV Golf GTi, but am thinking of converting to the 'sooty side' and have narrowed my choices to a 330d or errrrrrr...... a 335d (E90's).

I've been looking around at the nearly new/ex-demo cars on BMW and compucars and am wondering a couple of things:

Firstly, on a car like this, how much movement would there be on the sticker price? Used guides say around £29k, but how much could you expect to add on for the options?

Second, would the general consensus be that i-drive is almost essential on these cars for resale value? Seems that a lot of the AUC's don't have it. I must admit it's not something I am hugely bothered about having, but would it hurt me more come trade-in time?

I'm not going to ask if the 335d is worth the extra over the 30, as I've done some searches on that, and I think I know the answer. End of the day though, it all comes down to finding the right car at the right money.....

Any thoughts or advice would be most welcome.

Pleased to have found this forum BTW.

I would've thought you could get up to 1k off that at least? Have you looked at discounted new prices also? Not sure what they are for e92 but I know you can end up being cheaper than used. You might get a new 330d for the price of a year old 335d. Just a thought.

To me I'd probably rather hav i-drive, 6FL, prof hifi etc. and other options than the 335d vs 330d if it came down to it. The difference in day to day driving around town won't be that great but the options make a difference to me.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I had a look at drivethedeal and could get a specced 330d for around 29k.

Out of curiosity, I also got a quote on a new 335d with the same spec as shown on the link. It came out around 33k.

Have to say that my wife will drive the car more than me, so we need to get something that we would both be happy with. I suppose really that a nicely specced 330 would be all the car we'd ever need, but would I really be able to get that 'I could've had.....' thought out of my head.

Decisions, decisions......

My 320D is more than I need but I'd definately get a 335 next - I don't really know why? It's just that "I want that one"

The decision making is the best part all i would say is that if you can have the 335 then DO IT a 320 is a top motor but the 335

Welcome to the forum KG, only thing to bear in mind is that the 335d is auto only, whereas you have the choice in the 330d.

Gordon.

Welcome KG,

the 335d is not sooty as it has DPF (Diesel particulate filter) as standard.

Not sure about 330d, the 330d is lacking a turbo charger

Welcome to this great forum!
A few more considerations; your decision may be swayed by finance, if you are buying on a PCP type deal, new will be cheaper than used (probably) because of the better residual of the new car Vs AUC. Do you want a manual car? if so the 330d is for you because the 335d is auto only.

No surprises what I would recommend - the 335d!

AS for options, it is personal choice, a high end car like a 330d/335d will be much more desirable (and hence easier to sell on) with Nav and other toys, but I doubt whether you would recoup the whole cost, maybe 50% on the Nav (therefore making the car £1000 more valuable than one without). Leather is a definate.

Very valid point Carlos,I currently drive a 330D auto and whilst it does not have the paddles the option of slipping it into manual does appeal.
When I'm driving in London the auto is a godsend, but once out and about in the country lanes the manual option comes into it's own.

It's a bit like taking a sophisticated lady out to dinner, seducing her and then rodgering her rigid!

Can I interject here - do both paddles work the same way - push forward to go down a gear and pull towards to change up? Or is this wrong, does the left paddle work differently from the right one (change down vs change up)?

Just wondered.

yes mate it is like that, but for me a 16 yr old virgin: holding hands serenely walking around town then talkin her to the country and breaking her H****

no seriously its good dropping a gear or so, and setting the car up going into bends

gives you much more control so you dont end up losing a second when the fooker kicks down when yoru ready to overtake, you set the car up and WHOOOOOSH

Pete - thanks for clarifying. I don't think this is true for all manufacturers though, is it?

To be honest Gordon, that was a bit of a guess, the paddles are yet another feature of the car I havent yet fully tested! I am waiting for my driving lesson from Emerson Fitticarlotipaldi

Maybe another reason to RTFM !

Pete, your comments made me laugh! Ok, I have the FM in front of me now and it says:

> To shift up: pull one of the shift paddles
> To shift down: press one of the shift paddles

It seems Carlos, I mean idiot-proof - it won't shift if the engine speed would be too high.

you are right, if you drop down a gear and the revs rise to 4.5k, then go to drop it again it wont let you...

The manual is actually quite interesting.... Ok, can you only use the paddles when you select D/S where you can nudge the lever forwards or back also, or can you just use the paddles at any time to go into manual mode?
