Felt something jerk or break while backing up car

While backing into my parking spot, I felt a sudden jerk like I hit something. I put my car on forward, and then put my car in reverse again and I was able to back into my spot without any problem.

Just wondering why my car started jerking when backing up? Any ideas?

I didn't hit anything. I looked back, there was nothing.

If you roll with your (I believe) door ajar, the car will put itself into park in order to prevent an accident. It might do this with no seat belt on as well. I have had it happen to me.

I was backing up with no seat belt, but I always back up with no seat belt and this was the first time I felt something like that.

From what I can tell, the car is supposed to automatically activate Park if the car is rolling between 1-3 MPH, the seat belt is off, and the car door is ajar. That is when I have had it happen to me.. I just went to move the car back a little, cracked the door so I could see the curb, didn't have my belt on, and BAM.. it slammed into park. It is a disconcerting sound but supposedly it's ok (but I would not make a habit of it).

Maybe you accidentally hit the P button while the car was rolling around 1 MPH? I am not sure what speed the car allows P to be activated (and I do not want to test that out

I could see this feature being necessary though. Coming from a 6 speed manual for the past 5 years, it was odd getting my head around the push to park and I often ended up in neutral and/or putting it into reverse.
