Eccentric shalt sensor & experts please chime in!
Brought her in for battery connector recalls & dealer did a quick inspections & informed me that I have an engine leaks due to a seal broke & oil get into eccentric sensor, appro $1300 for the job.
She runs fine& no codes found. Should I be worry or just wait until it shows code. She is at 80k miles. Thanks guys. |

I am fairly familar with the 335 engine and I guess I don't know what an essentic sensor is. I would ask them where it is located and what it does. This sounds very strange to me.
Before I would authorize any work I would get the diagnosis then research to see if it is critical, if they are the best place to do the work as well... |

I had no codes when my eccentric shaft sensor crapped out. Made the car impossible to start.. took a LOT of attempts to start the car. Dealer told me it was hard to get it started when I dropped it off, too!
This was over a period of about a week.. just got progressively harder to start until I got frustrated and brought it in. Approx $1500 out of warranty. |

Eccentric shalf sensor itself cost $425, they needed to remove valve cover gasket due to it locates under that & near by a timming chain.
Again, she runs just fine & no problem Of starting & driving her either & very weird? Anyhow, I will monitor it to see what' up before having a surgery on her! Thanks for your inputs guys & appreciated it a lot. |

The sensor will sometimes leak oil through it, if it gets real bad it will push the oil through the harness. It can become a problem over time depending how bad the leak is. Usually you will have some driveabilty issues and/or CEL. It may be fine now, but overtime it will get worse. They are not BSing you. |

Ah I see where it sits now right in the upper tensioner path. What a PITA to remove all that crap to replace a simple sensor. Can I assume the function is to verify the VANOS is in the correct position?
I learned something I didn't even know the 328 had this... |

It monitors the position of the eccentric shaft, not the VANOS |
