Alloys damaged again . POTHOLES !!!

I have already moaned about damaging one alloy in a pothole. £100 repair bill from BMW body shop. Now I have damaged another one twice in 10 days.
Definitely not curbed them.
A lot of potholes in North Cheshire area.
Mine are 18" alloys.
How are you getting on with your 18/19" alloys ?
And before you comment, I already wear glasses. There are just too many deep potholes everywhere to avoid them.
My wife's Lexus IS 250 on16" alloys never seems to get damaged.
I am not bothering getting this alloy repaired at the present time, I'll be spending £100 every few weeks at this rate.
I must admit this 328 is the first car I have had with run flats and I think that there are far more disadvantages than advantages with them. Too noisy, too unforgiving, the car 'crashes' into potholes, too expensive to replace , punctures can't be repaired etc.
Not many advantages.
You've heard it all before.

Garage List
Got any pics?

Yeah got 18" 308's on mine, but touch wood not had any damage yet - could just be the pot holes down in the south aren't so bad although you wouldn't think it to look at some of the roads round here! Don't suppose there's any chance of claiming it back off the council?

Agree, RFTs are a compromise - you pay for the 'convenience' in various ways.

Hi Rob,
Pics ? Of the pothole or the alloy ?
Sorry not got a photo of either.
The council pay ? I doubt it. It would be hard to prove which pothole on a 5 mile journey on B roads, damaged the wheel !

How awful to have a double.
You are falling out of love, no wonder.

I have been to your part of the world and the roads are terrible. You need a tractor in Cheshire or a tank in North Cheshire.

Have you got M Sport Adaptive Suspension? It is a must have for BMW F30s in the UK. In 'comfort' mode, the ride is sublime.

Not got Adaptive Suspension.
I would like to drive one. Most of the time the ride is fine but as I said the car "crashes " into potholes.
My car was used . An ex BMW UK car ,2700 mile , £13,000 under list price. The car has£9,000 of extras.
I obviously have the invoice to prove it .
At that price I am willing to put up with some things that I wouldn't tolerate if I paid the £39,000 list price.

Sorry if I've upset you. Did not mean to.
The UK is pothole paradise. It's so tiring trying to avoid the damn things. So many areas in the UK have become no-go areas for me due to this. Fed-up and furious.

No , I'm not upset.
I like the car. Love the shape, comfy heated sport seats, as I said £9000 worth of extras. The odd thing that strikes me about the adaptive suspension ,is that taking into account its effectiveness and sophistication, it is one of the few BMW extras that appears to be good value.
The 328i is a rapid car but the fuel consumption hovers around the 30 mark.
When I was looking for a used car the 328 had the highest level of depreciation.
£26000 down from £39000 in 6 months & 2,700 miles. The 320 d had depreciated a lot less and all the 320d ex BMW cars had far fewer extras than the 328.
I am retired and only do 5-6000 miles a year so the extra loaded/depreciated 328 modern made financial sense.
The 330d was not available when I was looking for a used car & none of the used cars on BMWs used car website had adaptive suspension.
I have had many cars over the years & one thing I know that is a fact when driving a car is that 6 cylinders beats 4 any time.
I even like the light coloured interior of the Modern, although I can't imagine many younger people actually ordering a Modern as opposed to a Sport.

Brilliant value. You did well.

I have always wanted red leather seats for as long as I can remember, but not bright red ones. And, as luck would have it, Coral Red was the perfect red for me. The body colour had to complement the red seats! I've always been a bit obtuse in my taste, so, I choose Estoril Blue II: my first blue car. Other firsts, my first BMW, my first Diesel, my first auto. Risky business? Why not. I feel I am a wild child now!

I have to tell you, when I was looking for a used F30 I saw a few Sports with the Coral red interior... Brilliant. Always put a smile on my face.

Back on topic.

I think you should fix the wheel damage. Otherwise, there might be some corrosion especially in wild winter weather with salt and grit on the roads..

It should, though it's a temporary measure. Keep checking and possibly re-apply.

Isow you should be able to claim against the local council for the damage caused.

They are responsible for keeping the roads safe.

A few years back my car (Porsche) was damaged due to a pothole, I did some research and found via my local councils website they are insured and legally you have a right to claim. I followed their claims procedure, basically sent photographs of the pothole, time and location with a repair estimate from Porsche. They paid out..

The trouble with that is once the corrosion gets in the wheel will want a complete refurbishment.
Might be just as well "bite the bullet" and get it done.
I had the F10 550i M Sport and curbed the two off side wheels whilst hooning it. had the guy come to the house to repair them, made a good job to be fair.

In reply to TMP: no the tyre isn't losing pressure. The wheel is just scuffed, damaged paint, not gouged out.
In reply to F30 Fan: you are quite right I should be able to claim against the council. But the problem is:
I have no idea which pothole damaged my wheel ! It was at night , pouring with rain. I couldn't tell you whether I was in theStockport or Macclesfield area at the time. They blend from one to another and my car crashed into several potholes.
Their should be a moral here, I.e. keep off B roads, but some A roads develop some nasty potholes as well.

True ! I'd have to prove that the alloy wasn't scuffed before I hit the pothole !
I could , for example kerb the alloy, drive around looking for a pothole, take photo and then contact the Council saying I damaged the alloy in one of their potholes .
Plenty of people commit fraud, I doubt whether the council would cough up £100 for everyone who claims that they have a scuff on an alloy from one of the potholes.
Am I wrong in my thinking on this ?

I got £1100.00 from the council Due to damaged front curb side wheel on the M6, it was on the "heads of the Vally" road at night and a man-whole-cover was missing, caught out a couple of us. They wanted the dealership to examine and fit the new wheel/tyre
It cost them the £1100.00.

That's a great outcome . As you say a manhole missing and several other drivers had also damaged their cars. Damage to your car is in keeping with a manhole missing.
My damage is a bit of paint missing off my near side front alloy.
How would I know if other drivers had complained about the pothole that I claim had damaged the wheel when I don't even know which pothole it was ?
I'd have difficulty proving my case, I think.

(1) Don't drive in the rain on roads you know are pottled (new word).
(2) If you do have to drive in the rain, which is most of the time in Manchester, choose relatively good ones.
(3) Otherwise, catch a cab!
(4) Or a bus!!
(5) Better still: stay dry, stay safe, stay at home!!!
