e93 Rattles!!!

How many of you guys out there w/convertibles are experiencing rattles? My car was rattle free for the first few thousand miles but now rattles like crazy. I am getting rattles from around the rear window (where the top meets the body) as well as from the steering column.

I have searched and it seems like the steering column rattle is fairly common (both e92 and e93). Has anyone taken their car in for rattles yet? Anyone know what is rattling in the steering column?

The car was so quiet when I first bought it. Now it really pisses me off. But I am afraid to take it to the dealer as I don't want them to start searching around without knowing what they are looking for (good way to end up with more problems than I started with).

Anyway, thoughts appreciated.

I'm experiencing the same roof rattle (more of a squeak) where the rear window top piece meets the car body. I haven't taken it into the dealer yet, but I suspect the "clamps" in the rear that hold this component down need to be tightened.

No problems with steering wheel column squeaks...yet

really really sorry to hear that guys....I'll tell u something, i originally had placed an order for the e93, i ended up having dreams of really annoying rattling sounds coming from all places...i did alot of research and at the time everyones e93 was brand new and people really didint have rattling...

my gut feeling is almost every e93 will rattle after a couple thousand miles....its only natural for any vet to rattle, they always do....

anyways goodluck guys.

OT I know, but one thing I HAVE noticed is a type of wind drone between 50 and 60 mph with top up and all windows closed. It's the same type of noise you hear in any car when one window (usually a rear window) is down, and the wind entering the car at certain speeds makes this low frequency droning, wind pressure noise, that almost hurts the eardrums.

As soon as I hit 60 or so, it goes away...

I have been a member for a while and enjoy this forum a lot but never posted or replied.
Forgive me for not properly introducing myself first
but this annoying noise thing got me started .

Here you go

Mine started rattling around 2,000km and now clicking just over 5,000km

- Passenger side door area
- Squeaking & rattling from the back don't know exactly where
- faint tapping noise from driver side mirror

I took it to the SA twicw already but as soon as I drove off
the lot the rattling thing came back to haunt me:mad:

Scheduled for another rattling & squeaking trip to the dealer coming tusday.
Wish me luck and if you have similar problem or any idea plz let me know.
Thanks guys (& girls).

Listen i have driven a convertible car for 15 years and let me tell you that it is expected that you get rattles here and there...If u didn't want any noise than you should have considered a couple or sedan...A vert top is obviously not attach to the car like a coupe..I have my E93 for 2 months and yes there is a little rattle when i go over really bumpy roads, but i know what a vert is all about...Yes brand new it made no noise but remember the car never encountered real driving conditions...Joints and hinges will loosen up a bit but if you wanted a convertible, little rattles are to be expected...If you bring it to the dealer for this, you are just wasting your time!!!Convertible is a beautiful thing that no coupe or sedan will ever have and its the open air.....Coupes of course has the stability of a full body thus decreases chances of rattles!

I agree with you, but my top is "rattling/squeaking" when driving at normal speeds and that I do not expect (not just over bumps at slow speeds when body flex is exaggerated). I too have been driving convertibles for many years. Back in the mid 80s I drove a 74 MG Midget and it rattled, but that was expected...but oh so much fun. I also had a '97 Sebring JXi, kept it for 9 years, and it didn't rattle. I'm sorry, but I DO expect more from a BMW. If my Chrysler didn't squeak/rattle, I sure as heck don't expect it from a BMW.

I've looked at the mechanism and I do believe that tightening the "clamps" or whatever secures the back window section to the car would solve the problem.

Cheers!

I've noted that too. But I have a SUV that also does this so I thought it was just a pressure thing as well. Resolved with speed or opening a window a crack.

Angry

My e93 also rattles. 12.000 km, 8 weeks old.

Obviously the reason is the losely fixed interior in the back. Also something with the windows goes wrong. They also create rattles when closed and driving on bad streets. But the rattles from the back are definetly the worst.

It turned worse with every more kilometers I have driven so far. Now it's as bad as in an 15 year old Renault. ... So don't expect it will stay as quiet as it is today at your cars.

The car will be analysed and hopefully repaired end of next week by the local BMW dealer.
I asume it's just a construction failure but I fear they won't be able to fix it soon.

I'll keep you updated.

And by the way: no, it's not okay that a car that's that expensive rattles.

I've driven in a few convertibles. As mentioned by a few other people, you have to expect some type of noise. I took that into consideration when I ordered the 08 E93. I'm not there to hear how loud of a noise its actually making, but I'll trade alittle rattlen for that feeling you get blasting down the highway with the top down.

BTW, In addition to the rattles I listed in my OP, I also have rattles coming from the driver's window when it is up. If I crack it just a bit the rattles go away. Really really annoying!

Anyways, glad I am not alone in this! If anyone is successful in getting any of the rattles fixed, PLEASE post what was done (i.e., the fix) here for the rest of our benefit

Sounds like you have more then the common rattle'n noise.. Can't hurt to let them check it out. Might have to give up a week or so of having the car, but better to do it now before it gets worse and still under warranties.
