Unhappy My Two-Month Old <<CAR>> is Having a Surgery

Well I never thought this would happen to me but knowing my luck, it did...
I have had my April '07 build E92 328i for less than 2.5 months and have put on about 3400 miles. Last week, I noticed something strange while parallel parking. I cranked the steering wheel all the way to the right while going in reverse into a spot. Then while straightening the wheel out, I heard/felt a "pop" in the steering wheel(kind of like the pop in your elbow or joints when stretching). I could consistently replicate this "popping" and showed it to three different people at the dealership.

I just got a call saying that they are replacing the whole steering rack. I know that's what the warranty is for but I have mixed feelings because it's a brand new car that I purchased. Has anyone else heard this kind of a problem? Does replaced steering racks ever have negative long term effects? It is just an uneasy feeling watching my baby under surgery so soon. Well I will certainly get that extended maintenance/warranty plans after the initial period...

Sorry about the long post, just wanted to ask for your prayers.

Ouch, just don't let them give you a catheter before surgery.

Wow, the title threw me off. I had my PayPal out all ready to make a donation, I thought you had a newborn who needed medical attention.

To late. I had a "student nurse" give me a catheter when I was going in for surgery. I was on the fifth floor and I was told people heard me on the first floor.

I survived my encounter and IM sure the op's car will be fine also

Weird. I was referred to a dermatologist but by the time I got there my rash was gone. Still, the female doctor had me strip down to check things out (they seriously check everything feet, legs, ****). Then there's a knock on the door and this female resident comes in to observe as well. I just said to myself **** it enjoy the show....

I wouldn't worry about it. Replacing a component like a steering rack is not like having collision repair or the engine rebuilt in chassis. It is a pretty straight forward thing.

That's good to hear, that's what my SA said but wasn't sure.

Good luck with the car. You don't need to buy extended warranty, just sell it before it expires

A grinding noise while turning left. A growing pool of fluid in a multi-story parking lot.

Totally off-topic, but I called it into BMW Seattle the first time at 4:30pm on a Saturday, they took my car straight in, and had it back to me first thing on Monday. That part failed again two weeks later, which we put down to a faulty part (rather than the speed of the repair...)

This "clunk" in the steering wheel when turning at low speeds happens in some E90s, too. I have it in mine, but you really have to be looking for it to notice it, it's very slight. You definitely can't hear it on mine, you can barely feel it, but others (like you) seem to have it a lot worse, where you can clearly feel and hear it. There are a few threads here about it.

I brought mine in, and the SA and service manager couldn't feel it. Then, when I finally was able to show them what I meant, I was told all E90s did the same thing, and they didn't fix it. They gave me a E90 328i loaner (they did a s/w update), which didn't have this knock in the steering, so clearly not all E90s do it. OTOH, mine is so minor, I'd rather not have the surgery on my car unless it gets bad.

Best of luck with your baby!

Mine started doing the same thing, but only after about 30,000km, and only in the car park at work, and only sometimes when turning into my space at a real sharp angle. I won't bother to get it looked at because it never does it anywhere else, and so doesn't affect my enjoyment of the car... which will be off my hands in 18 months anyway at the rate I am driving it.
