Extra security

With a little over a month to go I am looking at what I can do to make my new car a little more difficult to steal or vandalise.

Was thinking of installing a CCTV system overlooking the drive. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Any other deterrents I should be looking at?

Short of garaging it nothing really, I garage mine at home. When away you takes your chances.

Still no good. They can break-in and drive it away. You need a coding/disabling system which kills the car totally. With this system in situ and operational, they'll need to lift it with a crane, helicopter or tow it. A good Auto Electrical Garage can install this system. It's not expensive but very effective.

The CCTV option seems useless after you see the videos of hoodies nicking BMWs off the drive way in the early hours.

Are the new BMWs really that easy to nick?

I have CCTV covering the garage/drive but don't see it as much of a deterrent. I keep the keys out of sight and house alarmed at night.

I know it isn't that much of a deterrent, but anything I can do to help, is worth doing.

Any advice on equipment spec?

Mine was purchased cheaply from Maplin but has remote access from anywhere and also from my iPhone. I'm sure others can give much better advice.

This is all I have with extra cameras.

The motion detection isn't very smart which is suspect is where the money goes but the quality is good. The extra camera I got for the drive is higher quality than the one it came with.

time for a post code change?!

On a serious note, prevention is a good deterrent, consciously make an effort to park in well lit area's when out and about, when at home make sure keys are never on display, have an alarm fitted at the house (or make it look like you have an alarm fitted!) and if you can ... park it over night in a locked garage.

Do BMW have an option for extra security? They have an option for everything else!! . Its about time they started using finger print scanners for entry and start...

If you call Auto Audio in Park Royal, London and speak to Greg Morris, he should be able to help you out. They are a very professional high end company. I use them for all audio and security aspects for my cars. I would trust no other garage.

You punch in a four digit code on a romote when locking the car and the only way the car can be re-started is when this code is re-punched into the small remote.

Here's their website:

What about those flood light sensors which also beep or make a temporary alarm noise?

Are those not allowed anymore?

Could also put fake camera there as well.
