Extended Warranty recommendations.
My 328i is coming up on one year old at the end of December, already has 13K plus miles.
So far I have had zero problems. Oil need not be changed, according to the computer for another 7 K miles or one year from now. Considering an extended warranty. Do I really need one on this car. Its obviously not a lemon as there have been ZERO problems to date. If I do get one, is it better to wait until 50K before purchasing, or do I get a much better deal now? And if you recommend an extended warranty, from whom? The BMW dealer? An independent? Any company in particular. Thanks much. |

If you are going to follow BMW's maintenance schedule, e.g. changing the engine oil every 15-20,000 miles and thinking that the transmission fluid (if you have an auto) is really for the life of the car, then yes, I would buy the extended warranty. As for when, you should ask your dealer about prices. |

Questions to ask yourself:
How long am I going to keep this car? If that answer is a long long time and well into the 100K miles you will not be much farther ahead with an extended warranty if you reach those miles at 7 years. Typically most BMW will run to 80K will not much but the essential oil changes. It is when you are past that is when your car begins to need consumable parts replacement. Brake pads, brake rotors, struts, shocks, coolant change, brake flush again, etc are likely to show up then. If your goal is to keep the car until the extended warranty is expired then sell it I would not do anything but the mandated BMW maintenance. If you plan to keep it past that point for a long time you should consider things like a fluid change for the diff and transmission at a reasonable interval like 50K miles. 328 is proving to be a fairly reliable car but how long you decide to keep it is up to you. Extended warranty was of no value to me because at the time I bought my E93 335 until the end of the warranty period extended warranty didn't cover the retractable top. It now does but I would have passed anyway because I do my own work on virtually the entire car except for what was mandated by BMW for warranty and they picked that up. I never saw any deals based on mileage but various dealers do sell them for different prices. Best extended warranty pricing I saw was in Atlanta and a sales person there Adrian and can't recall his last name was and I think still is selling extended warranty for lower prices than other dealers... |

Warranties are rip offs. You're basically prepaying for repairs or paying for repairs that will never happen. Keep your money and if your car breaks then pay cash to fix it. If you can't afford car repairs then you purchased a car you can't afford.

Normally I would agree with you but I've been eyeing them for my 335i just because if I had to replace turbos (not entirely unlikely) that would cost more than the total cost of the warranty plans that I've been looking at!

If you plan to keep the car more than 7 years then I would get the ext warranty otherwise it makes no sense to get it.
I recently bought an ext warr for my E82 84m/100K and I went with BMW platnium plan which cover the nav.

And if you buy a car knowing of a future repair then you must add that to price of the car and not be all surprised when you have to pay it. I think most people are scared into warranties because they don't actually have cash to fix their cars. |

In the instance your turbos need to be replaced between 82k and 100k it's about $1500 for the stock turbos alone, labor around $900 per side -- do the math. This is dealer rate/hours not an indy shop. If you cancel your extended warranty before you hit 75k you get $2k back. |

FYI I didn't buy a 3 series with turbos specifically for the potential repair cost. I bought a like new 2006 330xi for $15K cash. What a car! And I'm glad somebody else paid the depreciation. I can surely afford to fix it if it breaks

What since does it make to buy an extended warranty when you have 3 yrs or 37000 miles left on your original? If you he still wants to keep the car in a few yrs then purchase an extended warranty. Just do it before your out of the 4yr/50000 time frame.

The lower your mileage is the cheaper -- relatively it is to get the warranty. If you have 49,999 miles and a month left on your factory warranty the price differes from having 20k and buying the extended. and... Learn how to spell. |
