Can BMW sell CPO with body damage?

I got a CPO 2009 335i about a month ago. Few days after I bought it.. I noticed two dents in the rear bumper towards the bottom. I did not notice these when I picked up the vehicle and they were painted over and covered well. You can also tell the rear bumper has been resprayed as there is dirt underneath the paint (ugh) I immediately emailed my sales associate and told him and his response was "never been in accident sometimes customers respray" Why would it be resprayed then? Carfax shows no accidents. The paint is starting to crack around teh dented areas. Its awful paint. bought car with 27,XXX and it now has slightly less than 29K miles. Can BMW legit sell this car with body damage to it and not imform me? I know they can CPO a car thats been in an accident but I thought it must be repaired first? Cracking paint doesnt seem repaired to me.

Bumpers are often resprayed for used cars to make them look new since they are often scraped/dinged/chipped. It's usually not considered body damage since the bumper is cosmetic and easily replaced. It sucks that they did such a shoddy job repainting though. I would push for them to pay for a proper repair.

I also bought mine as CPO a year ago. 08 e92, rear bumper and fender had some dents and covered well with paints they used. It had no accident from carfax reports. I guess they dont bother the dents unless serious damages

Mine had a completely resprayed bumper in front. Rear had nicks. It's a CPO car.

They told me that they don't like to paint panels unless they have to so you may find scratches and dings repaired with touch-up paint. They can even sell cars with carfax accidents as CPO.

I will never buy another CPO car as I have discovered that their "inspection" is a line of crap. They are just selling a used BMW with a warranty included--there is nothing special about it otherwise.

Not to pile on but you only have yourself to blame. That is a cosmetic flaw that was easy to detect upon a good visual inspection. Its not like the car had structural damage that they were trying to hide.

I bought a CPO 2009 335 Xdrive and quickly learned that over half the car had been repainted and body work had been done to the passenger side doors. I was very angry. They offered to find me another car but after six months, they could not find one (335, Xdrive, manual trans, no black interior - hard to come by). So they finally agreed to buy it back. I found a suitable replacement at another dealer and they actually bought it back from that dealer so that I could trade it in and I did not have to pay all of the sales tax again. I took a big loss on the deal but at least now I have a good car.

My advice: ask and verify. I was told explicitely that they believed that the car was free of body work when I bought it. When I complained, they told me that they were aware of the work and that I had been informed of it. Needless to say, my head nearly exploded. I still do not think that the original car that I bought should ever have been certified given that they knew it had had body work but they did not know who did the work. So without taking the body apart, how can they certify a car like that? And I did have problems related to the body work, just as one would expect.

It wasn't easy to spot. It's on the bottom half of rear bumper which is angled downwards. And the cracked paint didn't start until recently. But yes it is half my fault. I'm aiming to have the dealer just do the right thing. I'm not necessarily blaming them.

That's tough. But they worked with you at least. I'm hoping this dealer will work with me

2 Months after I got my brand new 2011 335i, an old couple backed up into the front of my car causing $5k in damage (New Bumper, Dented Hood (Which was just bent back not replaced)) I ended up asking the dealer for their recommended BMW certified repair shop.

12 Months later I trade the car in at the dealer I purchased it at. They CPO'd the car.

I don't see anything wrong with that as long as it was only cosmetic damage and it was properly repaired. My issue is that this WASN'T properly repaired, but filled with touch up paint and sent on my way

My E90 was purchased CPO and it definitely had its front bumper resprayed to recover rock chips. It was really a crappy job so I wound up paying to get it professionally resprayed at a real body shop and not one of those mobile respray companies. The dealer never takes the blame for crappy respray jobs.

That's pretty bad if it was touch up paint.

A CPO is still a USED car. If you want a perfect car free of any cosmetic faults buy new.

Most likely the car was a lease return, so the previous owners probably utilized the cheapest method possible to "pass" any inspection when the car was turned in...

I just bought CPO and my dealer was up front about paint work done to the vehicle, that's all I can ask for. I 'm in the business, I have no issue with cosmetic paint work. As a matter a fact, I'm going to do the front bumper cover and the passenger rear qtr panel, all cosmetic, minor nicks and scratches, no big deal.

CPO isn't a NEW car. It's just an extended warranty. Minor body damage isn't a warranty item, so if it's been touched up or fixed well, there's no reason the car wouldn't be CPO'd. In the end, you're just buying an extended warranty.

This was how I understood it as well.
