Weird Squeak Noise When Breaking (In Cabin)

Ok, this is going to be an odd one folks. I was driving the other day and started to slow down at a stop sign when I hear this squaek from inside the car. It sounded like a squeaky wheel almost. It slowed in pitch as I braked. It does not happen on acceleration. To troubleshoot I turned off the heat. No squeak. It seems to go away after the car and heat have come up to temp. Has anyone else had this? Any ideas on what it might be?? I am completely stumped as to what it is. Thanks.

It could be your blower motor. My 328i had the same problem when I braked, and my wife's X3 occasionally does it. It was worse for me on cold or humid days, and some days I wouldn't hear it at all. When I braked with the fan on, it put enough force on the bearing to cause the squeak. Like you, I never heard it with the fan off. I replaced the motor and the problem went away (there are DIYs on this site, and the part was ~$150 IIRC).

In my case the cowl on the windshield had popped up, letting water fall down and hit the blower motor, causing it to gather some rust. I pushed the cowl back down when I replaced the motor and haven't had a problem since. The cowl on my wife's car isn't popped but hers still squeaks.

Snyperx, any luck resolving the squeak? Did you replace the blower motor? I've got the same thing happening, but it's very intermittent. When it happens, turning the fan off gets rid of it. It happens under braking and sometime hard cornering, so I figured it was pressure on bearings somewhere. I took it to the dealership last month but they could get the squeak to happen. Now that it is becoming more frequent, I'm outside of my "new car warranty".

Blower motor must be a pretty common failure. Two days after I took my car home I noticed it lightly squeaking... Fortunately my local dealer replaced it under the CPO warranty. I only have the CPO for a few more months, hope anything else that's gonna go does so soon!

I plan on replacing the fan at some point. At this stage I have pretty much been able to live with it. I don't notice it unless I am specifically listening for it.

Yup, blower motor. Mine does same thing and once heated up I don't hear it, so I can live with it. I found that on speed 2 it's audible but on speed 3 or higher the actual fan noise covers up the squeek. Or just turn the radio up a bit ;p
