To Stagger or not to Stagger

Thinking about purchasing a set of 19" M5 reps for my e90 335i.

I am interested in going with a non-staggered setup as that would allow me to buy one extra spare tire and wheel that I could use in rotation so if I ever receive a flat in any of the tires I immediately have a spare tire I can swap it out for?

I have read various topics of staggering and it seems that I am okay in doing this as long as I use a spacer for the rear, so the tires are not so tucked in? Any other opinions on this?

I see you mentioned some of the pros to do this.
Rotation
Spare

Cons might be handling but you can read about that in other threads.

Guess is a matter of preference. I like my staggered set up.
Don't care much about rotation and I have a BMW comfort kit in case of a flat tire.

As for cosmetic appearance, yes, you will need spacers to bring out the wheels a little.

Handling will improve, and you will gain the ability to rotate tires... Win-Win.

No real downside.

This car was designed to run a staggered set up. Yes, you can go non staggered, but why? I have found that with my previos M3, the rear tires wore about twice as fast as the fronts. I wouldn't expect E 90 to be THAT MUCH DIFFERENT. So if I wear out a set of rears, I can put on 2 tires with new tread and better traction. Plus the look is better.

Well, so far I have worn out my fronts way more than the rears...I am doing a non-staggered set up for track use only. I am keeping staggered for stock use.

How do you think the LSD affects the tire wear?

Assuming the driver can handle having less understeer. I understand having a neutral car is better for an experienced driver...

that being said... how many times for most drivers are going to be spending time pushing their car to its absolute limits . its not like these cars understeer like hondas... they certainly oversteer plenty... even my 328 does...

I say put the maximum amount of rubber on the ground as possible. you can never go wrong with more traction...

Should help save that right rear tire a bit.

Either the staggered set up or the non-staggered with spacers looks good. If you want to cancel some understeer, as well as be able to rotate the tires, and have a spare, go with non-staggered.

both setups have their pros and their cons.... you just gotta see which one suits ur driving style the most... on my E46 i went non-staggered, never understood why staggered would make sense... i mean you cant rotate you tire.... then i got my E90 and decided to go staggered... and i love it... a noticable difference in handling... and it looks soooooo much better.... so i cant rotate the tires, i dont track my car, so they should last me long enough...

"There was an excellent article in Sport Compact Car recently where they installed new tires and wheels on their Project 350Z part II - Balance . The 350Z from the factory comes with staggered wheels and tires - and it understeers. To achieve neutral handling and eliminate the understeer, SCC found they had to install the same size tire on the front of the 350Z as the rear, and it greatly improved the handling and balance of the car."
From the RX8 forum-I can't get it to link but a google search should find the article. It seems to me that staggered makes sense on a Porsche but not a front engine car. But then again, it's like discussing religion and I'm not a true believer.

Well I am not an aggressive driver or anything, I am stationed in Germany for the next year so will see alot of high speed autobahn driving but never any track. I may get the Turbo Tuner or something if that matters.

If I go with a staggered setup the tire size is only what 1 inch wider from 235-265.

If I never get to drive the E90 staggered will I even notice a difference?

did you ever decide to go w or w/o the staggered?

im looking for the same wheels but I have a non staggered setup already so would I still need spacers?

..yur staggered setups are not that different to create a big impact..usually 30 mm ~ 1 inch.. so it is just a matter of personal choice..besides the e90 runs more neutral with staggered setup unlike a 350Z..
