Winter rim/tire setup
Greetings
I have read people buy incorrect rim/tire for there winter tire setup and am worried about falling into the same issue. I just got the car (2007 bmw 328i coupe (i am assuming with sport package), I am looking for winter tire/rim combo for this car (Car is canadian from quebec) dont know if that makes a difference. The current tire on the car (front 225/40r18, rear 255/35/r18). Do the winter tires need to be rft? Do i need a TPMS for the winter setup? I read blizzacks rfts are a a good setup. Would 17" rims fit on this car? Sorry, just a noob looking for proper winter/tires setup. I do a lot of driving so the best winter tires would be preferred. Thank you |

Many Eliminate the stagger and use 225/40R18 front and rear. This works very well for winter and results in better winter traction. You can use either run flat or non runflat tires for winter use.
For TPMS, Are your original equipment valve stems rubber or metal? When this vehicle is equipped with OE rubber stems, it uses a system that does not use pressure sensors. Instead, we it uses a system that detects how many times the tires rotate/spin in a given distance (a tire low in pressure is deflected and rotates more often per mile). If one tire spins more often than the other three, a warning is sounded. This type of system does not use TPMS sensors. If they are metal, it usesTPMS sensors. We do have 17" wheels that will fit the car for winter using a 225/45R17 tire size on all four corners. There are handful of wheels we carry that will clear the brakes and work well. Two of the more popular choices have been the Sport Edition A7 and Rial Salerno. Thank you Gary,
Very informative! Just another question, in your opinion what would be the best RFT and non-RFT you have for winter? Not looking for performance, just want to make sure car is not sliding etc. in the snow/ice. Thanks again, |

Top non run flat tires for snow and ice traction are the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 and Michelin Xice XI2/Xi3. The best run flat winter tire for maximum snow and ice traction in 225/40R18 is the Bridgestone Blizzak LM60.

Unfortunately the Tire Rack does not offer discounts (even to forum members). However when ordering through http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AH8&url=index.jsp and referencing "Gary/E90Post" as your 'previous contact' a portion of the proceeds goes to support the E90Post site.

So a square setup is better for winter? Any other advantages?

The more narrow tires typically perform well in unpacked snow and slush. The ability to rotate the tires to maximize tread life is another advantage.
